Slovakia’s Run Comes To An End

By Wyatt Earp | February 28, 2010

.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Finland has won the bronze medal in hockey, rallying from a late two-goal deficit for a 5-3 victory over Slovakia. Olli Jokinen scored the tying and go-ahead goals during the dynamic third-period comeback by Finland, the only team to win four medals in the past five Olympic tournaments.

Finland’s Jere Lehtinen, Ville Peltonen and captain Saku Koivu all won their fourth medals, equaling an Olympic record shared with three players.

Pavol Demitra had a goal and two assists for the Slovaks, who couldn’t win their nation’s first medals in a team sport. Slovakia still had its best Olympic finish in fourth place.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed, but they played a terrific tournament, and still had their best finish ever (4th). Logprof over at Ace of Spades said it best:

“Yeah, good going Slovaks: beat the Russians, eliminated the reigning champs the Swedes, gave Canada a hellacious run, then came so close to bronze.”

I think my grandparents would be proud of them. I know I am.

They had a good run. Now for the US to win the Gold Medal. That will be the best part.
And what about us winning gold in 4 man bobsled. I remember when we used to get 17th and were happy. Cool deal.

Dang….they had that plucky underdog thing going on and were such an entertaining team to watch. I loved their efficency versus the Swedes and how they put a scare into Canada…….

But with that said, go USA!!!!

Sully – They did. Until a lousy three-minute stretch.

Ingineer66 – I was amazed when I heard they won the bobsled gold. That’s killer!

Fenway_Nation – I took the day off so I could watch the game without idiot cops bringing in stupid frauds and b.s. arrests. USA! USA! USA!

You can’t say they didn’t give everything they had. They absolutely did.

RT – They did, indeed. Gave them the fight of their lives.

Bob – Same for Ryan Miller. Just stink when you play the Flyers.
