Hockey’s Back!
By Wyatt Earp | October 3, 2009
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! My ice hockey season is underway, the NHL is back, and my fantasy hockey team is drafted. And naturally, since I do not have the luck of the Irish, I have stories about all three. To wit:
1. Our hockey season started on Thursday, and I was surprisingly without much rust. It’s been a few months since I have been on skates, but I had more energy that I imagined. Overall, the team played well; Randal got on the board early, Vinnie skated well, and Badger was solid in goal. It would have been a perfect night if it weren’t for the second period.
An opposing player had the puck at center ice, and when I came up to him, I poked the puck away with my stick. Amazed, I took the puck and went in on a breakaway. Here it is, I thought, the first goal of the year. When the thought was finished, I heard the “swoosh, swoosh, swoosh” of the players behind me. Not good. I was caught by not one, but two opposing skaters before I could get a shot off.
When our shift was done, Vincent Antonelli turned to me on the bench and said, “God, you’re slow.” Yeah, no kidding.
2. The NHL is back, and with it comes my DirecTv NHL Center Ice package. With it, I get every NHL game all season long. It’s a must-have for any hockey fan. Of course, the Versus channel also carries hockey games, but I don’t get that channel anymore. Why? Because Comcast sucks donkey balls.
Apparently, Comcast “rented out” the Versus channel to DirecTv for years. This year, the bags of douche at Comcast decided to shoot their rental fee through the roof. DirecTv didn’t want to be held hostage by these tools, so they refused to pay it. They posted a message saying that Comcast’s new rates would force them to put new charges on their customers, and they said they would not do that. Good for DirecTv.
Of course, if I didn’t get the Center Ice package, I wouldn’t be seeing any hockey this year, except for the few games shown on the NHL Network. Get bent, Comcast, and thanks for reminding me why I ditched your terrible service years ago!
3. Our fantasy hockey draft took place last Friday, and although I drafted dead last, I think I did okay. Anchoring my team are San Jose Sharks goaltender Evgeny Nabokov and Calgary Flames forward Jarome Iginla. The rest of the draft results are below. (MoDo is Vinnie Antonelli and Commish is Deathlok.)

I’ll lend you some luck of the Irish… I seem to have a bit to spare this week.
Consider yourself honorary Irish. You just need to fake cheering for Notre Dame a couple of times…. Man I hate Charlie Weis.!!!

I got to watch the game last night, and I am watching the Flyers play the Devils, tonight. YAY!

Ditto on Comcast and DTV. As much as I miss versus, I admire Direct TV for taking care of their customers.
I’ve been with them for 10+ years with a 6 month hiatus in 2004 when I moved and thought I’d try comcast. It was ok until the 6th month bill came out when they DOUBLED my monthly bill. Took me all of 20 minutes to cancel and sign up with DTV. After arguing with idiot behind the counter as to whether or not her giving me a free month of HBO (which I don’t subscribe to anyway) would not change my mind. “Unplug the damn thing now’, was my response.
