Slovakia Kisses Its Sister

By Wyatt Earp | June 16, 2010

Slovakia had a terrific debut in the World Cup this morning, taking an early lead against New Zealand. Things were going swimmingly for the team, :

The hung heads, long faces and talk of “tragedy” did not point to a team who had just scored their first ever World Cup point. That was because Slovakia, appearing at the tournament for the first time as an independent country, had learned a harsh footballing lesson when they let New Zealand snatch an equalizer in the last minute of added time in Tuesday’s Group F match.

Both teams picked up their first ever point thanks to the 1-1 draw but the contrast in emotions was stark—New Zealand tore off their shirts as if they were celebrating a win, while the Slovaks slunk away as if in defeat.

“Of course this is a small sporting tragedy for us,” coach Vladimir Weiss told a news conference.

Ain’t that the truth. Erik, and I stared in disbelief when New Zealand tied the game. Kyle screamed, “Nooooo!” Now they have to wriggle out wins against Italy and Paraguay. No easy task.

Damn, I guess I can stop looking now. I knew there must be somebody who gave a damn about soccer, and I’ve found you.

Budd – Yep, that’s me. I love the World Cup, as do the boys. We watched the entire Slovakia game yesterday, and most of the Brazil game. I am currently TiVo-ing the Spain game so I can watch it tonight.

Did you read the sore-loser comments made by one of the Spanish players? Heh.

Glad you didn’t take that the wrong way, Wyatt. As with golf, or any other sport played with a ball, I don’t see the attraction; I don’t think any less of those who do, though. Hell, I have my own ways of wasting my time that others might think pointless.
