Suspect Steals 45 Fire Hydrants

By Wyatt Earp | April 26, 2010

Somewhere, Captain America’s head is :

A Riverside County man was arrested for allegedly stealing dozens of fire hydrants to sell for scrap. The man, 45, was arrested Wednesday and remained jailed on Friday. Authorities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties say they suspect the man stole 45 hydrants. They believe he posed as a repairman, shut off the water, unbolted the 80- to 100-pound hydrants and hauled them away in broad daylight.

Authorities said they got a break when a water district employee in San Bernardino became suspicious of a man in an orange safety vest driving a white utility truck — the description witnesses gave for the hydrant thief.

Authorities said the hydrants were cut up and sold for scrap for about $1.60 a pound but they cost up to $1,800 to replace.

The idiot’s mugshot is below the fold:

Heh.

How about the guys that buy this scrap? Can we say accomplices; yet it seems that no one ever goes after them? “Duh…………… I didn’t find anything suspicious when the guy brought in pieces of hydrants I just thought he ran out of manhole covers”

Danny – If they are, you better not bring the hog to WyattPalooza.

    Ingineer66 – Probably wouldn’t get a plum nickel.

Crusty – That always irked me because there are dealers in my division. Always playing dumb.

Jon – Heh, now that would be funny.

Crusty out here they have arrested people at the recycling plant. Yes it is rare, but after the railroad and the State lost a lot of copper wire, they cracked down on the places that buy this stuff from the thieves.

    Wow, this is new.
Usually it’s just morons stealing historic, ornamental iron gates, and the bottoms of street lights.

Crusty has a good point… And I’d be drawing and quartering that asshole… Especially if someone died because of a missing hydrant!

Ingineer66 – Yeah, when the state gets involved it’s a crime. Normal folks? Not so much.

Mrs. Crankipants – We have ornamental railings outside the house. They’re booby trapped.

Old NFO – Think of all the dogs!
