Hockey Night In Philadelphia

By Wyatt Earp | July 31, 2009

Well, since my last hockey update, the boys played only two games. The rest have been postponed due to the constant thunderstorms that have been hovering about my fair city. The first game was a massacre. Kyle and Erik’s team lost by a score of 11-2. I was working, but the wife said that the other team just kept running up the score. Nice. At the end of the game, Kyle slammed his goalie stick on the ground in frustration. It was not a good evening.

Last night was much better. The boys were playing Kyle’s friend Jacob’s team, who they lost to previously by a score of 5-1. Not this time. Kyle and Erik’s team played very well, both offensively and defensively, and the game remained scoreless for a while.

Part of that was thanks to Erik, who found his new position: Center. The wife said he won almost every one of his face offs, but not in the usual sense. Instead of drawing the ball back (like he does in the video below), he was pushing it forward. He would push the ball forward, move past the opponent, and make a break for the goal. Good stuff:

He took face offs for the rest of the game, and likes playing Center better than Defense now.

Kyle made up for the previous game’s shelling by letting in only one goal. The missus said he had a lot of terrific saves, and the goal was scored on a 2-on-1. Here he is freezing the ball after Erik shoved it to him from Defense:

Of course, if Erik’s pass scored, it wouldn’t be so good.

The boys played very hard, which is all I ask, and came out of the game with a 1-1 tie. The score remained the same through OT, and while they didn’t win, they are laying well as a team. The boys know that, and their confidence is greater now.

Their next game is on Sunday – a rained out make-up.

RT – Yep, it was a good way to forget about the last one.
