Indian Museum Displays Gandhi’s Toilet

By Wyatt Earp | September 13, 2008

This is a joke, right?

Even if the toilet was displayed in a museum, who would want to see it? Would Indians take photos of themselves sitting on it while reading a newspaper?

Maybe an Indian supermodel can lean her head inside to replicate the perils of anorexia?

MUMBAI – A museum at a former home of Mahatma Gandhi has a new exhibit — a replica of the specially-built mobile lavatory used by the father of Indian independence.

What’s there to see? Have you ever seen how skinny Gandhi was? The Olsen Twins probably take more dumps in one week than Gandhi took in his entire life. I’m just sayin’.

An official at the Sabarmati retreat in Ahmedabad, western India, confirmed to AFP a newspaper report Friday that the loo had been recreated at the site, which houses memorabilia and artifacts from Gandhi’s life.

The Mumbai Mirror tabloid quoted Gandhi expert Prasad Trivedi, 82, as saying the original was removed 22 years ago because it was deemed inappropriate for the surroundings — but he felt it should have been preserved for the nation. (H/T – )

They felt the terlet should be “preserved for the nation?” Hopefully, the loo was empty, because Lord knows what else they would have liked to keep “preserved.”

    They wanted to preserve a custom-made porta-john?

Do they not have anything better to do? Oh, let’s see…umm…they could work to improve the lives of those living in extreme poverty. I think Gandhi would have liked that a little more. Not so sure he’d go for the whole “stare at my john” thing.

If it was Ghandi’s, do they call it a “Peace” of crap?

    Deanna – My thoughts exactly.

    AJ – Well crafted.

According the George Orwell, Gandhi was very interested in bowel movements.
