Exceeding All Of His Goals

By Wyatt Earp | September 22, 2011

The fall soccer season began in earnest last week for Kyle and Erik. For Kyle, who has been playing for years, this is old hat. For Erik, last week was a new experience. For the first time, he and his team were playing on a full-sized soccer field. The younger divisions split the field in two. Now, he’s playing on the same size field as Kyle is. So far, the 100-yard sprints haven’t affected him – he runs like a deer.

The good news is that he’s playing with the same size nets that Kyle is, too. And for someone who scores as often as Erik, that’s a godsend. Erik’s team won their first game, 3-1, but he was held without a point. Last night was a different story.

Erik’s team had only one sub, so he played the entire game. Midway through the first half, Erik took possession of the ball, and went on a breakaway. The opposing goalie had no chance, and Erik put it in the corner to give his team the early lead. At the half, Erik’s coach asked him to play defense – something new for him – because he wanted to save his legs.

Erik, being Erik, played defense with an offensive mindset. Halfway through the second half, he intercepted a pass and took off on another breakaway, with his teammate Anthony next to him. Erik passed to Anthony, who shot it at the goal. The goalie made a save, but the rebound came right to Erik – who buried it for the 2-0 lead. When the missus texted me about the goal, I replied, “I thought he was playing defense!” She replied, “Um . . . he was.”

The other team scored a late goal, but it wasn’t enough. Erik’s team won, 2-1, staying undefeated, and my boy scored both goals.

It’s going to be a good year.

Real – Oh, most definitely! Erik is a phenom, and part of that is a credit to Kyle. Playing soccer together in the backyard made them both better players.
