The Things You See . . .

By Wyatt Earp | September 27, 2011

When you’re out without your gun.

See this little bastard? (Click to embiggen.) That black thing welcomed Mrs. Earp as she was pruning the rose bush in our backyard. I was in the den when Erik came running in: “Dad, come out here. Quick!” I jumped up, thinking maybe Elizabeth Banks was outside. No such luck.

Instead, I saw what turned out to be a Black and Yellow Garden Spider. The damned thing was about two inches long and looked like it could kick my ass. I snapped the pic and looked for it online. Apparently, it’s not harmful to humans, but it will bite if provoked, so we had the kids give it a wide berth.

As for Mrs. Earp, she’s never going out back again.

You didn’t stomp on it? My wife makes me prove I killed it. LOL

We had a giant spider build a web right next to our front door. The damn thing was as big as my hand, and I was afraid to go after it with a broom.

Nothing could be more embarrassing than having your ass kicked by a spider.

Uh…spiders were the reason the .410 cartridge was invented.

I think that’s right and that’s all that matters.

I get them in my garden now and then; they eat bugs, so why bother them?

Danny – No, it was nestled deep in the rose bush. And I was worried stepping on it would just make it mad.

Lou – There’s a big one in a web next to our front door, too. You can actually see it growing from day to day. It’s safe until it tries to get inside. Then? BAM!

    Kaveman – Fair enough.

BobG – We left it alone, as we do most spiders. At least until they get inside.

    Elizabeth Banks?
I thought only CHRISTINA could make ‘ya move THAT fast…lol.

Out here (now) in the Midwest, I got ONE rule:
“If it’s found INSIDE the house…it’s already DEAD.”
And the cats make good bug-hunters (shades of Starship Troopers)

    ;)

Anything OUTSIDE is best left alone (and is probably good for the garden).

    Stay safe out there.

Using a .410 on that spider is like using a .22 pistol as your primary home self defense gun.

Better than nothing, but less than desired.

This is what . Better safe than sorry.

Mrs. Earp is a wise, wise woman.
