Meet Philly’s Newest Darwin Award Winner

By Wyatt Earp | April 23, 2011

Local thug and career criminal Khalil Burton just saved the taxpayers thousands of dollars in court costs. Why? Because he watches too much television. You see, in the land of TV, all of the cool criminals shoot their guns sideways and carry their “nines” in their front waistband.

The sideways shooting style always hits its target, and the makeshift waistband “holster” is always secure. The gun never falls out of the waistband and it never goes off. In the land of TV, everything goes according to script.

In the real world? Not so much.

An 18-year-old man fleeing police was fatally shot with his own gun when police tackled him in North Philadelphia early Friday. Khalil Burton, whose last known address was the 500 block of McKinley Street in the Crescentville section, died at Temple University Hospital about 5 a.m.

Just after midnight, police responded to a call about a person with a gun at 13th and Cambria Streets. They saw Burton nearby, police said. Burton fled and the officers gave chase, tackling him on the 2900 block of North Broad Street, police said. When Burton fell, his gun went off, wounding him in the groin.

And now, as the folks in my division would say, “He deeeeaaaad!”

I totally love stories like these!! He be a gangster…
But as a rule groin shots are not usually deadly. (bleed out?)

Howdy Wyatt! I know it’s wrong to laugh at someone’s death. But he was, as you said, a career criminal and because he watches too much TV (or emulates his street idols who are the next Darwin Award Winners) he fell down when being chased and tackled by the coppers and killed himself with his own (illegal) gun.

And I apologize if I appear to be insensitive here, but I’m ROTFLMAO!!

Which explains it very well! One dead bad guy, thousands to go.

    Darwin Award…ROFL!

    Couldn’t happen to a “nicer” guy, I say…
(Probably nicked the femoral artery – take the “scenic route”.)

    Yep, “he deeeeeaaaad!”

    :)

    Roll safe out there.

I believe that putting your pistol in the front of your pants violates the “never point a gun at anything unless you wish to destroy it” rule.

Weelllllll, I won’t pass judgement upon the departed, but I do wonder if he was “an entrepreneur” like Lamardo “Flair” Allen of New Orleans fame.

I won’t link anything on this, you just have to Google the name and get through all the unwanted advert popups yourself. But it is rather amusing.

This tragedy could have been prevented if this guy had a dickie-do. That’s when your gut sticks out more than your dickie-do.

    I’m always a little skeptical of accidental shootings with a three-round, two-inch group…

Mrs. Crankipants… then the firearms almost always ends up sliding down the trouser leg. Plus, finding it when you need wastes time.

Me? Shoulder holster, why do you ask?

it was a shot gun and the bad guy isnt always what the paper says he was in the wrong but a kid at the same time he just started in the wrong direction he just needed a friend or a guide to lead him away from the way of the poisonous streets think about the time we all could make a wrong turn in life eric

Real – He has no one to blame but himself.

Danny – This is a good start.

Bob G. – And I wonder why he was carrying a gun. Probably had no intention of shooting someone, right?

    Crusty – Live by the gun . . .

Proof – If he shot that off he would have saved lots of unborn – and federally raised – children.

Robert B. – Nawlins. Enough said.

Mrs. Crankipants – Then he would just have a severe limp.

LDIV – A good score in any game.

Richard – Most drug dealers are ball-less. I’m surprised he hit anything.

Rick – And in this case, they don’t cost extra.

E – He was walking the streets with a shotgun. He was arrested last month for carrying 90 packets of cocaine, and he resisted arrest. How much more bad can this bad guy be?

Darwin Award? Are we sure he doesn’t already a baby mama somewhere?

  17. Wyatt Earp Says:
    April 23rd, 2011 at 10:37 pm

Heather – Sadly, the chances that he reproduced are very good. And when his family sues the city, said baby mama will be set for life.

Why you be hating? My boy Khalil was on his way home from church when he found that gun. He was just trying to get it off the streets when those awful police started chasing him for no reason.

Umm, how does a nine go off by contact? Was he drawing with his boogerhook on the switch?

  20. Ingineer66 Says:
    April 24th, 2011 at 10:34 am

Good point Skip. A Sheriffs deputy shot another Sheriffs deputy while arresting a woman north of here on Friday. Luckily it just grazed his head. Everyone is asking for an explanation of just how it happened.

  21. richard mcenroe Says:
    April 24th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Ingineer66 — Short form: he pulled the trigger.

  22. Wyatt Earp Says:
    April 24th, 2011 at 8:28 pm

Ingineer66 – Sadly, there are comments like that at the link.

Skip – He was probably getting ready to shoot at the officers.

Ingineer66 – Because the deputy had his finger inside the trigger guard would be my guess.

    Richard – There ya go!

  23. e Says:

maybe its all strange that a shotgun goes off under two people on the ground and one get all of it no injury at all to the cop and why not tazz him or shot but no he tackles him when the call said man with a gun yeah

  24. Wyatt Earp Says:
    April 24th, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Eric – I got it. It was the cop’s fault. The officer would have been well within his rights to tase or shoot this gun-toting thug, but the officers used restraint – tackling him to the ground to affect an arrest. Burton’s gun – yes, BURTON’S GUN – goes off, killing him.

But yeah, it’s the cop’s fault.
