Thank God It’s Friday

Whatever you do, watch out for that weekend rush hour traffic:
This wreck occurred during Sunday’s race at Dover. We missed it by a day. It says a lot about NASCAR and the safety of their vehicles that Joey Logano walked out of that with nary a scrape. Damn.

I was slack-jawed on that one when it happened. It is amazing that he walked away.

That left a mark, or three…

This was a spectacular, but not all that serious of an accident. The real message has already been mentioned: NASCAR has become safety conscious. Between improvements to the tracks (safer barriers) and the cars (the seats and head restraint systems), the drivers now operate in an _almost_ indestructible cocoon. The wrecks are still spectacular, but the drivers walk away. This is an example of good engineering.

Heltau – Good point.
RT – Amazing no one – not Logano, or any other driver – was hurt in that.
Old NFO – Or ten.
Map – Absolutely. While the death of Dale Earnhardt was a tragedy, at least some good came from it in the form of better safety.
