Always Bet On Black (Widow)

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in Iron Man 2.

caught the first photo of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in the next Iron Man film (set to release in 2010). As you can see, I am very pleased. What red-blooded American male wouldn’t be?

The first Iron Man blasted Robert Downey Jr. back to stardom, and the superhero franchise is readying to return to the big screen on May 7, 2010. Iron Man will battle new villain Mickey Rourke, size up Scarlett Johansson (exclusive photo of ScarJo as Black Widow, after the jump!), and, hopefully, prove that the success of the first movie wasn’t a fluke. Downey knows the movie isn’t an underdog this time around. “There are a lot more invisible eyes on us now,” he says.

I don’t know what to think of “ScarJo,” since I don’t have the first clue as to whether or not she can act. Believe it or not, that’s more important here than how hot she is. Iron Man deserves better than that. It would be ideal is ScarJo could act and be hot, but time will tell.

As for Mickey Rourke, I think we’re good here. The guy can act when he wants to, and I think he’s really motivated to play Whiplash. Let’s hope.

I think this one will be fun. Robert Downey really surprised me. I used to despise him when he was going in and out of detox and inexplicably being offered the umpteenth chance in movies. He always played the coked out loser character chewing up the scenery in movies like “Natural Born Killers.” Back then I would have expected Downey to be found dead long before MJ, but obviously he pulled himself together. Downey was the Iron Man movie. Special effect opuses are a dime a dozen these days, but solid leading men are rare.

…and so far these super hero movies have had better second films than firsts.

Crankipants – Iron Man was the second best film of 2008. First, was The Dark Knight, in my opinion. The two of them were the best superhero films of all time.

I am waiting for Green Lantern. I would love Thor. Hard to beat a god in a battle unless one is a frost giant. Loki the Fire Giant and his kin, ya know….
