Philadelphia Police Officer Shot

By Wyatt Earp | June 14, 2009

Officer Ashley Hoggard

Officer Ashley Hoggard

And once again, the shooting occurred in my division.

A 26-year-old Philadelphia Police officer is at Temple University Hospital recovering from a gunshot wound he sustained while patrolling the streets, early Sunday morning.

Police say that Officer Ashley Hoggard and his partner, both of the 39th district were out patrolling the streets as part of Operation Pressure Point, when they heard gunshots coming from the area of 13 and Somerset Streets around 2:30 a.m.

I know Officer Hoggard. We work the same schedule, and he is always at the division with arrests. Good cop, nice guy.

Lieutenant Vanore, of the Philadelphia Police said, “They observed a male that they believe was firing a weapon, they took cover position as they seen him heading in their direction.”

Despite taking the cover position to protect himself, police say that Officer Hoggard was shot once in the shoulder. Hoggard’s partner drove him to Temple University Hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Thank God for that. As we in Philly know by now, it could have been much, much worse.

When police arrived at the scene they recovered a gun and came across three other victims who had also been shot. We are told that these three people are also listed in stable condition.

The suspect was not apprehended and remains at large. (H/TCBS3)

Well, enjoy your freedom while it lasts, scumbag. We’ll find you, and we’ll bring you in to face (hopefully) swift justice.

    A few random thoughts …

Gunman. Three others victims – happy to gun down a cop. Rival drug gangs?

Hope you can get the low life off the streets but watch out for yourselves.

Wounded in the shoulder? Was he issued with a bullet proof vest?

If you can, would you get a message of support to Officer Hoggard from the UK? Sounds like he is doing a great job and maybe now is a good time to tell him. Thank you.

Wyatt, make sure when you catch this scumbag, make sure he “slips” on a bar of soap, at least once.

    Joated – Whatever works, right?

Jon – And he’s an equal opportunity shooter. He hates everyone.

    Admiral – Nor can I.

Alan B – The first two shots struck his vest. The third hit him in the shoulder.

Morgan – I’ll be happy if he drops a bar of soap . . . in prison.

RT – It’s open season, and we all have a bullseye on our backs.

    Old NFO – Agreed.

    Mrs. Crankipants – Thanks much.

TexasFred – Great stuff, great site!

Rick – Hopefully, he’ll be in cuffs by the end of the week.

Raptor – Let’s get him first. Then, hopefully, he tries to resist.

Kate – The police officers are heroes. I’m a detective, which means I’m a secretary with a gun.

Mario – The only bad thing we heard is that his arm use may be slightly limited due to the location of the entry wound. Hopefully, that is not the case.
