Philadelphia Police Officer Shot, Killed

By Wyatt Earp | February 14, 2009

Officer John Pawlowski

Officer John Pawlowski

Jesus Christ, not again. And this city wants to lay off police officers.

Officer John Pawlowski is the seventh – SEVENTH! – Philly officer killed in the line of duty in two years. He is also the second officer from my division killed in 16 months.

OLNEY – A 35th District police officer has been killed in the line of duty in Northwest Philadelphia. The officer has been identified as Officer John Pawlowski. It happened at Broad Street and Olney Avenue around 8:20 p.m. Friday.

Fox 29 News is told two hackney cab drivers were involved in an argument when one of the cab drivers said he was going to call police. The other driver allegedly threatened to shoot him and the officers when they arrived.

When Ofc. Pawlowksi arrived at the scene with another partner, he was shot in the chest and rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center. The gunman was also shot by Ofc. Pawlowksi’s partner and another officer. A gun was recovered at the scene.

Officer Pawlowski was pronounced dead at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

The suspect is at critical condition at Einstein in police custody.

It is my sincere hope that the suspect dies.

Fox 29 News is told he was newly-married and was expecting his first child.

Officer Pawlowski is the second 35th Police District officer slain in the line of duty since October 2007 and the seventh Philadelphia police officer who has lost their life in the last two years. (H/TFOX29)

Please pray for the officer and his family. I will post information on a memorial fund as soon as I receive it.

UPDATE: I just found out that John is the brother of Bob Pawlowski – a guy I worked with in patrol. We were promoted together. Great guy, great cop.

The LAST thing this city needs to do is lay off police officers, it’ll turn this city into Camden.

    Wyatt…
I spent some time with Bob last night. Needless to say, he’s beside himself. I pulled up to his Father’s house to see if the Detail Officer needed a relief. I saw Bob in the window of the house. I wanted to stop in, but I didn’t know what to say. I’m not good in these situations (who really is?). Bob saw me, and came outside. He invited me in, and I’m glad he did. We talked for about an hour. I can only imagine the pain Bob and his family is feeling.

We had a lot of work to do last night, but it was eerily quiet. It seemed none of us were really there, we were just going through the motions.

E.L. – The powers-that-be are letting the criminals run the city, and won’t let us take it back. That’s what’s happening to the city.

B.A.- I’d appreciate him more if his actions backed up his words. They usually don’t.

RT – And the piece of garbage is still alive. Hopefully, his status will change soon.

Morgan – Bastard doesn’t deserve to live.

Diller – Wish the roles were reversed. Wish John were still here.

Ky person – Scumbag will probably live longer than I will.

    Admiral – Thank you.

Lillian – It won’t stop until the bosses allow us to send a message. And we both know that’s never going to happen. This city is too p.c.

Mrs. Crankipants – We’re pretty much there already.

Wagonsux – If you see Bob again, please let him know that I am very sorry for his loss. And for God’s sake, please be careful out there.

Real – It’s been like this for a while. It’s a shame, but until the gloves are allowed to come off, this nonsense will continue.

    Ride Fast – Thank you.

Alan B – John was wearing his vest. He was shot just above it.

    Outsidephilly/Old NFO/Skul – Thank you.

Leoni2 – You and me both.
