Phillies Fans: Proud To Be Morons

By Wyatt Earp | October 25, 2008

Take a look at this t-shirt. Read the slogan on it. See anything wrong with it? If you went to Villanova University, you probably think it’s okay. Heh. If you have a brain in your head, you think it’s a grammatical abortion.

It began as a caller’s remark just last Thursday. In short order, a local sports blog and one of the nation’s leading sports blogs began singing its praises as a Phillies rally cry.

Then, T-shirts and mugs were designed to get out the message, and hundreds of items have already been sold, raising money for charity.

Don’t get me wrong, selling these idiotic shirts to raise money for ALS is awesome. They could have used a less embarrassing idea, though.

Have folks found the perfect slogan for the Fightin’ Phils? Even if - or because - it’s ungrammatical. Judge for yourself: It’s “Why Can’t Us?”

“Ungrammatical?” Are you friggin’ kidding me?

“I love that the grammar is so bad on it, makes it even more appealing and lovable,” wrote Tony in the first comment.

Obviously, Tony is a Philadelphia-area moron.

Then A.J. Daulerio picked up the cause on Deadspin, his nationally popular sports blog.

“This is just so endearingly dopey, I’m hopeful it does catch on,” he wrote the same day. “… That is a slogan that will last a lifetime. (H/T - The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Jesus, I sure hope not! Look, this town already has a reputation as a cesspool. It’s sports fans are ridiculed the world over - for obvious reasons. We still can’t live down the “throwing snowballs at Santa Claus incident,” and that occurred 30 years ago!

So, knowing that, why would people actively embrace their inner moron by clinging to this ridiculous, idiotic, “ungrammatical” slogan? It’s because Philadelphia sports fans don’t know any better.

This baseball season cannot end soon enough.

“Ungrammatical use” is the correct way to describe a solecism.

Yeah, I don’t think the people who find it cute thought about the stupidity of it, thus creating another stereotype about Philly fans. However, a lot of Philly fans they will revel in it; therefore, making it a bit fitting.

Yep…I tried to fix one sentence, forgot to delete a word, and have created my own solecism.

    I rock!
