U.S. Wins Nail Biter: Moves On

By Wyatt Earp | June 23, 2010

What an incredible game!

Landon Donovan scored in the first minute of stoppage time off a rebound, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria. With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination, Jozy Altidore was stopped on a breakaway by goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. Donovan hustled in and kicked in the rebound to win Group C Wednesday.

After his U.S. record 44th international goal, Donovan joyously ran to the corner flag and his teammates ran down the touchline to mob him.

The U.S. will have to wait to learn their opponent in the next round. Until then, it’s party time!

The USA was robbed AGAIN by an incompetent official who saw something that clearly wasn’t there. Luckily they pulled it off. Best game so far.

Captain – Disallowed another goal. Saw that. It was definitely good. Oh well . . . I’ll be watching the Germany game when I get home.

They should have won 3-0 or 4-0 if they hadn’t missed so many open/makeable shots.

RT – I prefer singing, like the British fans do.

Randal – How many posts were they going to hit in one sitting?

Captain – Good game with lots of defense. They’re in, too. Now, if Slovakia can win tomorrow and have a bunch of things happen . . .

Pity the Limeys got through, but at least the Frogs went home in disgrace — in coach, even, not first class!

Bob – England is full of great players, but as a team, they stink. We’ll see how far they go in the elimination round.

Danny – 6 of us, and a billion other people on the planet. Then there’s baseball, . I’ll take soccer, thanks.

In 45 days 99% of us still won’t care about the World Cup.

Why? Because NFL Training camps and the preseason will be in full swing. Baseball will be in the stretch run after the trade deadline, and soccer will still be a niche sport that gets 30seconds on the evening news IF there was something exciting during the game.

    Only cricket is more boring.

CP – Please stop with the baseball. That is definitely more boring.

Baseball is less boring if only because they play until there is a winner.. well other than that one All Star Game. Plus less “flopping” to pretend you are hurt.
