Obama Backers Disappointed In Philly No-Show

By Wyatt Earp | January 17, 2009

obama-trainDid these supporters seriously think he would have an event that was accessible to every single supporter in this wretched town? What are these people smoking?

The sooner these people realize that Barack Obama is just another typical politician - like Bush, Clinton, et al - the better off they will be.

The word that came up, again and again, was disappointed.

Some longtime supporters of President-elect Barack Obama - people who gathered petitions for him, knocked on doors for him, organized their neighborhoods for him - said they felt let down at not having the opportunity to see him in person tomorrow in Philadelphia.

Excited that Obama had chosen their city from which to begin his inaugural train ride to Washington, many of his most loyal backers had expected he would hold an open-air event here - just as he plans to do down the tracks, in Wilmington and Baltimore.

In fairness, Obama probably doesn’t want to set foot in a city with a $2 BILLION deficit. It’s bad luck.

Instead, Obama and his family will commune with an invitation-only crowd of about 250 people inside 30th Street Station before the train departs around noon. No open event has been announced.

It’s okay, though; Obama’s spokesperson said the event was not for big shots, just regular folks. Uh-huh.

“I am disappointed for the masses of people here in Philadelphia who would like an opportunity to show their love and affection for this family before they leave,” said Ruth Birchett of North Philadelphia, who did networking for the Obama campaign all last year and invited out-of-state volunteers to stay in her home.

“I really don’t even understand the point of coming to Philadelphia to meet in a room with a few people,” she said. “I don’t get it.”

Don’t worry Philly Obamatons, a real impact city will get an audience with the president-elect:

In Wilmington, 32 miles from Philadelphia, Obama will address a train-station crowd about 1 p.m. Public access to the site will begin at 9 a.m. AccuWeather is predicting the high there will be 27 degrees. (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Wilmington, Delaware? Bawahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Hey, Wyatt–Obama already ruined my day, coming to Willmington. We were supposed to go out to eat, but Mr Charm refused to go anyplace for fear of traffic jams!

A traffic jam in Wilmington=six cars.

See, if he really wanted to historical about things, he would have given a speech in all that open space down on Market Street…by some bell or something.

    Barack who?

Miriam - I have been there. Their traffic “jams” are little league. :)

RT - I don’t necessarily blame him for not going public here - it would have been a terrible strain on our department; more so than it already was - but the thing I don’t get is his idiot followers thinking he’s “just like us!” He’s not, you idiots. He said what he had to say to get elected - like every other typical politician.

Captain - You know, the guy who made TIME Magazine’s cover 13 times in 52 weeks.

Of course he’s just like us-
he’s taking the train isn’t he?

Admiral - And they’re wide awake now!

Mrs. Crankipants - Somehow, I doubt his train smells like tinkle. Unless Ted Kennedy is on board.
