Boy Suspended For Using Pencil Sharpener

By Wyatt Earp | September 11, 2008

Well, in fairness, the pencil sharpener was broken! Oh, the horror!

HILTON HEAD ISLAND — A 10-year-old boy here has been suspended from school for having something most students carry in their supply boxes: a pencil sharpener.

The problem was his sharpener had broken, but he decided to use it anyway.

String him up! Hang him from the yardarm!

A teacher at Hilton Head Island International Baccalaureate Elementary School noticed the boy had what appeared to be a small razor blade during class on Tuesday, according to a Beaufort County sheriff’s report.

It was obvious that the blade was the metal insert commonly found in a child’s small, plastic pencil sharpener, the deputy noted.

The boy — a fourth-grader described as a well-behaved and good student — cried during the meeting with his mom, the deputy and the school’s assistant principal.

He had no criminal intent in having the blade at school, the sheriff’s report stated, but was suspended for at least two days and could face further disciplinary action. (H/TThe State)

I have only one reaction to this story:

This about typical for today. We are in big trouble.

It sounded almost like the sheriff was thinking, “This is stupid. I do not know what the School Officials are smoking, but I will launch an investigation.” At least that is what I hope he was thinking.

My little girl almost got tossed from school for bringing one of those mini Swiss army knives (which she brought for the fingernail file). If she wouldn’t have been a zero trouble kid, she would have gotten the boot.

My problem with your reaction is that it should be a stick figure of the kid’s mom whacking the principal’s head against the wall…

This is one reason I assert that our public schools would be much better off if pubschool administrators (among other criminals) should be removed from their posts en masse and put to work in chain gangs making little rocks out of big rocks.

Ha,…. Poor kids today… When I was in fifth grade, I took a hand grenade to class. The teacher asked for it, saw that it was inert and handed it back to me.

For some strange reason, lots of jarheads decided to teach in my hometown. I’m not complaining!!!

On 9/11/01, the class president of West Point was from my home town. CDT. Joey DaSilva at the time.

Today reminds me of how lucky I am to have grown up in this particular town.

    Ugh.

    1. Ask the kid what it is.
    2. Tell him that a broken pencil sharpener could hurt him, and that it might be safer to throw it out. If he can’t afford a new $1 sharpener, the teacher could buy one for him.

That teacher wouldn’t last a day in high school.

I really hope the kids parents SUE the sh*t out of this douchebag teacher. That’s the only way short of physical violence to stop this insanity.

Admiral – You can say that again.

Marvin – Hopefully, as you said, it’s an appeasement move.

Doghouse – That is completely insane.

Old NFO – We’ve had jobs come into the division where a juvenile was arrested for possession a fingernail clipper. Seriously.

David – Now there’s thinking outside the box!

Sully – Everyone should have a Marine for a teacher.

    GroovyVic – Have at it.

RT – See? You’re trying to isnert common sense. You know that never works!

Captain America – And it’s only gonna get worse over time.

    Rick – Yup.

I would just like to say that it is so wonderful that all other crime in this city has vanished, freeing up officers to respond to these sort of calls.

    It’s for the children.

God, what is the world is going on here? Sounds like a real trouble maker to me. Oh all the problems inside schools today and they are going to go ballistic over a kid who brought a plastic pencil sharpener to school. What’s next, checking if junior brought to school the right kind of lunch bag?
