Are They Flocke-ing Kidding Me?

By Wyatt Earp | January 18, 2008

Cub ‘Flocke’ is the public’s choice

(CNN) — A 5-week-old polar bear cub, which had to be taken away from its mother over fears it might be eaten, has been named after a public poll.

The bear, which lives at Nuremberg City Zoo, will be known as “Flocke,” which in German means “flake.” Officials at the German zoo said they received more than 50,000 e-mails, letters and postcards from all over the world suggesting names for the female cub.

A jury with representatives from the zoo and town council decided on the name Friday.

Okay, I have three issues with this story:

  1. The best name Germans could come up with was “Flocke?” Isn’t this the same country that almost conquered the planet last century? TWICE!!! My how the mighty have fallen.
  2. Nuremberg needed a “jury” of zoo reps and politicians to judge this nonsense?
  3. If “Flocke” was almost eaten by its mother, then why would Ed Markey and the Democrats worry about the plight of the polar bear? They eat their young! Maybe it’s time to thin them out a little!
