Phillies Win 102 Games, Ousted In First Round

That’s a shame.
Okay, everyone knows I’m not a Phillies fan, but I’m not going to gloat too much today. I was shocked that they lost last night, but in the long run, I think this is a good thing.
Many, but not all, Phillies fans have become way too arrogant. They bragged about the “four aces” on the pitching staff, they bragged about Jimmy Rollins (who I still think takes weeks (and months off), and they thought they deserved a world title for just showing up.
A crushing defeat has ended the Phillies season, well short of the World Series. The St. Louis Cardinals outlasted the Phils 1-0 in last night’s winner-take-all contest.
For the Phillies, Red October lasted only one week. The Cardinals made a first-inning run stand up, in what for Phillies fans was an exasperating 1-0 loss. The Phils’ bats fell silent again, and with all of the high expectations of this season, fans are left searching for answers.
The media in this town fellates this team. The anchors dress in Phillies shirts, trying to convince us that they’re “real fans.” Stop it. And while we’re at it, stop with the “Red October” nonsense. It’s tacky to name a playoff run after a bloody Russian revolution.
The best advice I can offer Phillies fans is this: be realistic. I’m a Yankees fan, and I knew they weren’t getting out of the first round. I’m a huge Flyers fan, and while I think they’re going to be great this year, I’m not telling people they’re going 82-0. If you’re realistic in your assessments, you come off as slightly less obnoxious. Telling people you’re going to win the World Series in April makes you look like a jackass. /rant.

I was pretty shocked when they lost last night. I thought they were the team this year once my Giants collapsed.

Between the Yankees, Giants, Red Sox , Phillies, Braves and Rays, It has been a season of nearly unprecedented choke-itude.
As a Boston fan, I wonder how much of this turmoil (optimistically referred to as ‘cleaning house’) is going affect the signing and/or retention of free agents in the offseason.
Long story short, I have not concerned myself with a National League team since October 2007

Sometimes teams catch each other at the wrong time in a short series. If it was a seven game series Phili would probably have won it. Don’t have much of a chance to trot out the #1,2, and #3 starters twice.
I don’t think they need to clean house. Get rid of Rollins and figure out how to replace Howard for a good chunk of 2012.
Look at the other top teams in the NL. The Brewers will blow up their team after the post-season. The Giants are not as good as people think. The Cards are very close to a rebuilding phase. Arizona? They are always a hit or miss team but they play like their manager used to. Grit still counts these days.

Its interesting – the Phillies and the Yankees had, repectively, the first and second best records (W/L) in Major League Baseball this year.
I had hoped that the Yankees, having seen Derek Jeter become the ONLY Yankee to ever have 3,000 base hits in his career and seen Mariano Rivera notch more saves than anyone else in baseball history, would make it to the World Series and play against – and beat, of course, I am a Yankee fan! – the Phillies.

The better half, who is not especially baseball-wise, told me late in the regular season that she did not have a good feeling about this team. I agreed.
Then, we discussed the last series with Atlanta and I said that I was rooting for Atlanta to win a couple of games so the Phils would avoid having to play St. Louis.
Friday night, the better half said she understood.
Still, it’s not a happy time.
However, the Eagles lost today!!!!!!!

We played stupid and that is why we lost.
The Aces were aces. No one else knew the first thing about baseball, apparently. Their brains all fell out. I have no idea. I have never seen suck idiotic batting and offense in general in my life. They thought they were all unstoppable sluggers, I guess. Hubris.
So, we deserved to lose, we can’t kiss Ryan Howard’s chokemeister butt anymore (how do you tear an Achilles while choking?!?!), and J-Roll is tired.
So there we are. It sucked. But we deserved to lose. For being stupid.
