Need Some Rapid-Fire Prayers, Please

By Wyatt Earp | April 29, 2011

By the time you read this, we’ll be on our way to the hospital.

Kyle, my oldest son, has been battling what we thought was a pimple for almost two weeks now. After a few days, he started scratching in – it’s on his chin – and it started to get bigger and bigger. We brought it to the doctor’s attention on Thursday, and he said it looked like an abscess. If it got any larger, we were to call. Well, it did, and we called – only to be told that we’ll have to make an appointment with the dermatologist. We finally had that appointment yesterday – a full week after it was first diagnosed – and the dermatologist said he thinks it’s a cyst . . . and it needs to be fixed, pronto.

Since it would take too long to cure in the office – under local anesthesia – the doc made us an appointment at St. Christopher’s Hospital. That’s where we’re going now; to the plastic surgeon. The plan is to lance it or otherwise drain it, then use the plastic surgery to repair the area on his face.

Obviously, Kyle is freaking out. So am I. We don’t even know if they can perform the surgery today. We may get there, have a consult, and be ordered back another day. In the meantime, Kyle can’t play lacrosse or soccer – or anything else really active – for fear of having the cyst burst.

So, if you have an open line to the Guy Upstairs, we could really use a prayer strike right about now. Thanks.

UPDATE: The plastic surgeon at St. Chris decided to do the procedure today. She explained what she was going to do, numbed him down, and brought the scalpels to do their magic. Kyle wasn’t a fan of the pain killer needles he received beforehand, but other than that, he was pretty brave about it. There was a lot of seepage and some blood, but overall, the doctor did a fantastic job. Kyle’s wearing a huge bandage on his face – he;ll have to wear it for two days – and he can’t play sports for a week, but the good news is that the infection was taken care of and he’s on the way toward healing. Thanks so much for your prayers and well-wishes.

Just reminds me that America has the best healthcare in the world. My family has had a few health challenges and when we put ourselves in the hands of our local doctors and nurses we cannot help but be more than impressed with their expertise, caring and motivation. The outcome would have been very different in Canada or England or Mexico, or Ireland or Scotland or…..
I will end the speech here. The Earp’s have our best wishes, prayers. God’s speed Kyle.

Again, thanks everyone. Today was bad, as we needed to get the gauze out of the wound. It wouldn’t come out, no matter how hard he washed his face, and the missus finally had to pull it out. He screamed and cried for a while afterward, but it had to be done.

    And we felt terrible afterward.
