Reaction To Donovan’s Golden Goal

By Wyatt Earp | June 26, 2010

Try to watch this video .

College student Robby Donoho watched Landon Donovan’s golden goal on Wednesday and decided it merited an instant tribute. Little did he know, within hours it would wind up bringing the United States soccer hero, flicking through the Internet half a world away, to tears.

It didn’t take long for the [Donoho's YouTube video] to be passed through to the USA’s training camp near Pretoria and onto the laptop of Donovan himself. For all of the praise and plaudits the goal-scoring star received after his moment of glory, it was seeing the reaction sparked by his calm strike into the bottom corner of the Algerian net that touched him the most.

“Not sure if you guys saw this but it brings tears to my eyes every time,” Donovan wrote on his Facebook account, while linking to Donoho’s video. “Thank you all so much … we can do it.”

Hopefully, we’ll be able to celebrate again today when the U.S. plays Ghana (2:30pm EDT on ABC).

UPDATE: Ghana 2, USA 1, Final (Extra Time) Dammit.

I caught most of the 2nd half on the radio during the commute to my 2nd job, but had to shut it off just as regulation expired. I had literally walked across the parking lot when I heard a bunch of my co-workers shout “G-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-A-A-A-A-L!!”. At first I thought they were just doing that spontaneously or watching another match, but then I heard the TV announcers excitedly yell “Un Goal daramitco por los Estados Unidos en la ultimo minuto de el juego…..”
As it turned out, the only TV station they could get there that carried the game was one of the Spanish channels….

Fenway – Tied up with about 20 minutes to go. Heart can’t take much more.

Even though they lost, they really handle themselves with a lot of class and are helping to pave the way for the next generation of soccer players. We’ll get there eventually.

Fenway – Yeah, they had opportunities, but couldn’t get anything going toward the end. Slovakia and Germany are still alive, though, and I’d be watching the Cup anyway. Just a shame the U.S. is out.

RT – Overall, they played very well. Just hoped this was their breakout year.

That was freaking awesome. I did get choked up. Too bad they could not continue the run. England choked out today too and the other North American team Mexico is out so I guess I have to root for Ghana.
