Flyers, Bruins Set For NHL Winter Classic

Frakkin’. Awesome!
BOSTON – With Red Sox reliever Hideki Okajima playing catch in the outfield and a bright blue summer sky hovering over Fenway Park, Boston Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward stood on the infield of the major leagues’ oldest ballpark and pretended to be miffed.
“That’s how they got me down here,” he said. “They told me I was taking batting practice.”
Not exactly.
The NHL announced on Wednesday that the Bruins will play the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway on New Year’s Day in the annual Winter Classic, an outdoor game that has become one of the league’s signature traditions since it began in 2008. Unlike previous years, when the annual outdoor game was played at Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium and Chicago’s Wrigley Field, this year’s NHL matchup will be part of a festival that will include public skating and a college hockey game. (H/T – )
Yes, it would probably be more of a rivalry if the Flyers were playing the Rangers, or the Bruins playing the Canadiens, but I still think it will be a terrific bout.
So Sully, what do you want to bet for the game?

Um, so it’s a “signature tradition” that’s one year old?

Supposedly, since I have season tickets, I will have an opportunity to buy tickets.

Doghouse – This one (Flyers, Bruins) will be the 4th ever. There was one in Edmonton a few years ago. Still, not exactly a “signature tradition” yet.
Deathlok – You lucky bastard.

I’d have rather seen a Pens/Flyers matchup at Beaver Stadium. We could have crashed at the young lad’s apartment (he’s a soph at PSU this year). Besides, between the Pens fans and Flyers fans, we could have come close to filling the joint (108,000), which would be an almost unmatchable feat (unless the Wings played at Ann Arbor some time).

Yeah, I was also hoping for a Beaver Stadium game, since it’s in my back yard. There would have been a lot of fights in the stands (assuming a Pens/Flyers game).
Er, will be. They’ll do it. It’s a matter of when.

Sully – You suck . . . and you’re on! I’ll put up my beloved Keith Acton jersey (and the six signatures on the back number), unless you’d like a new jersey. Lemme know.
BA – Gonna be awesome!
Bob – I thought for sure they’d have the Habs at Fenway, but what do I know?
Prof – I hope so. I’d have to sit at center ice and root for them both.
