Michael Phelps Smokes The Reefer

By Wyatt Earp | February 1, 2009

That's good stuff, man!

That's good stuff, man!

“Noinch, Noinch, Noinch, Schmokin Weed, Schmokin’ Weed, Doin’ Coke, Drinkin’ Beers…”

TAMPA, Fla. — Olympic great Michael Phelps has acknowledged “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment” after a photo in a British newspaper showed him smoking marijuana.

Phelps said: “I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.” (H/TFOXNews)

Uh-huh. Didn’t you say the exact same thing in 2004 when he was arrested for drunk driving, Michael? Arrested for DUI when you’re 19, and now you’re photographed smoking weed out of a bong. Smartest athlete . . . ever! I’ll bet your parents are really proud. Good show, Michael.

Jerkass.

Yeah, a real role model, eh?

Hopefully little kids who look up to him won’t get wind of this, but that’s unlikely.

What’s his next excuse for his behavior?

I cannot believe he didn’t know someone would take a picture with a phone. Unless you’re a moron you have to assume everything you do is being watched by someone. Times that by 100 when you are a celebrity. Has he not payed attention to Youtube, celebrity sex tapes, any celebrity gossip site? Celebrities are always watched. ALWAYS.

Imagine losing multimillion dollar endorsements because you were stupid enough to smoke dope AND do it in public. I cannot begin to understand what this kid was thinking (yeah, I know he wasn’t, but that’s not good enough)

A hero to a zero in sixty seconds. I was proud of the kid during the Olympics, now I feel duped.

    It’s a thought crime…

He’s hurting no one. As well, this ridiculus war on drugs and marijuana is beyond idiotic… it’s turning otherwise law abiding people into criminals for nothing.

Not to mention the drug wars the black market funds are fueling.

    It’s time to decriminalize marijuana.

Oh, please. The guy smokes pot. The only crime is getting caught.

Most kids nowadays have tried pot. BFD.

Obviously the fame has been more than this 23 year old kid can handle. Could you handle all the constant attention, girls throwing themselves at you and the millions of dollars? Not many can without consequence.

I hate to think that this will possibly prevent him from competing in the next Olympics.

As far as his parents, I know his Mom is heartbroken, but she has taught him the best she can. His Dad hasn’t been a part of his life…. he walked out early.

Role model my ass… What’s going to be the NEXT excuse?

I took a pass on this for a couple of reasons:

    1) The English tabloids just love to wreck someone’s life. They did the story as if he was Hannibal Lechter. What happened, Amy Winehouse stay at home that day?

    2) Smoking Pot isn’t exactly the crime of the century. Granted it’s pretty dumb of him and it’s even dumber to get caught.

    3) I guess it’s lost on everyone that he was in a DORM full of other kids his age and they were all smoking pot and drinking. So they just focused on him. He’s a SWIMMER, not PRE-MED like the guy who passed it to him!

    4) Phelps has spent the better part of his life training and living an extremely regimented life. He’s missed out on a lot. Now that he has triumphed the guy deserves to blow off a little steam.

    5) Anyone want to take a stab at what the Steeler’s party will be like tonight?

    6) Does anyone else want to broadcast what their college years were like? Or how about their Service time?
I know our barracks got a “little out of hand” back in the day.

I am inclined to give the guy some slack for a while.

Who cares? He smoked some weed. Anyone who can smoke some dope and still win a crapload of gold medals is even more of a role model to me.

RT – He’ll have to check his excuse rolodex.

Mare – And that is my point exactly. It’s not the weed, it’s allowing someone to photograph you while you’re smoking it. Stupid. I am just pointing out the asshattery of it all.

Uncle J – Again, the weed ins’t the issue I am harping on. Hell, most of us laugh at cops when they bring in a weed pinch. The issue is that he’s a moron who allows people to photograph him while doing something that (right or wrong) is illegal.

Kevin – Let me guess: You’re typing that comment while wearing hemp jeans?

Foo bar – And again, that’s the issue. He was stupid and got caught. After all of his successes, he should know better.

Deanna – Lovely. I’ll bet Dad was bragging to his friends when Phelps won the gold, though.

Old NFO – “I did not have sex with that woman?”

Captain – I gotta write this more slowly. The. Issue. Is. Not. The. Weed. The. Issue. Is. That. He. Was. Stupid. Enough. To. Get. Caught. Jesus!

Randal – Actually, he probably has better endurance while high. Good for him!

Wyatt- See- Point- #2. Sheesh. You know its a non issue when I agree with Randall :)

    February 2nd, 2009 at 6:09 am

Well, sure, I’ve smoked pot…but NO ONE TOOK MY PICTURE.

Have we learned nothing? Never photograph your stupidity!

You guys sound like dopes. Would you want your kids to be hitting the bong? Get real losers. That’s why some of you are still in the lame positions you’re in. I wouldn’t touch someone that was a celebrity/multi gold medalist/doper.

In high school they were the most boring, least motivated, wasted talent, ever.

Yeah, it’s really a non issue??? You guys sound like pot heads defending yourself when your mom found your stash. Grow up.

Swimming has naught to do with personal behavior. I bet he wasn’t swimming to be a role model. Stupid reason to swim. You do it for yourself. I do. Just like the bong and the drink. It is for yourself. Now, just like the real Wyatt Earp, I am a bit of a scoff law. All the good marshals of the old west were outlaws. Please yourself in this life. Nobody else can make you happy. Really.

That being said; everyone of use is guilty of poor personal choices now and again. Some of us are just personally blind and do not see our own stupidity (OK, self righteous conceit). To me, those are the most unbearable folk. When you point that finger three more point back!

  15. mare Says:
    February 2nd, 2009 at 12:08 pm

Phelps did not earn money swimming. NO one does. He earns money endorsing a product based on his outcome in the pool. His behavior out of the pool will cost him. And whether or not you like it, he is a role model. Whether or not he likes it he’s a role model. Role models don’t have their picture taken smoking pot. And guess what, clowns, it’s illegal whether or not you think it should be.

Change the law then say no big deal.

How much money did he lose for his DUI?

He won’t lose a penny for this.

  17. mare Says:
    February 2nd, 2009 at 1:42 pm

“He won’t lose a penny for this.”

He had to win another 8 gold medals to get the contracts he has now. Yeah, that was easy.

  18. Randal Graves Says:
    February 2nd, 2009 at 2:07 pm

You didn’t answer the question….I’m still right.

  19. Wyatt Earp Says:

Could have been worse: He could have been pictured smoking c*ck. (Sorry, but I had to break the tension here.)

  20. mare Says:
    February 2nd, 2009 at 2:30 pm

We won’t ever know how much he lost with his DUI because it’s impossible to determine who DIDN’T offer him a contract
    because of stupid behavior.

    Answered.

Give us all a Break! He’s just taking a hit from the bong. Now if he starts smoking cigarettes, lives off of Prozac, has a few shots of Vodka after work or pops a couple Vicodins… we ALL need to worry… if YOU don’t think that’s more of a problem… YOU GOT MAJOR ISSUES!

  26. deadcenter Says:
    February 3rd, 2009 at 8:25 am

Look at the picture. Unless he can see through his ear, he probably did not know he was getting his picture taken.

Endorsements, so far 3 of his biggest sponsors are sticking with him, others unknown. I think most will stick with him because most people realize smoking weed is a stupid crime. (no, I don’t smoke weed)

    Olympic committee, satisfied with apology.

Non-issue? Yes. Any other reaction? Epic Fail.

Kind of explains eating 11,000 calorie a day though.
