Settling Up
By Wyatt Earp | December 6, 2008
Never say that I don’t pay up on my bets.
Every year, my brother-in-law (“Fish”) and I make our college football wager. I am a Michigan Wolverines fan, and he is a Penn State fan (and alum). For the past five years or so, we have made the same wager. The loser of the Michigan/Penn State game would have to dress in the colors of the winning team. I have been lucky enough to win this bet every year since we started. Always the kind-hearted individual, I was content to see Fish dressed in my Wolverines jersey . . . and post said photo on SYLG.
And then, 2008 arrived. The Wolverines stank, and Penn State was running the table in the Big Ten. I was telling my friends that the Wolverines sucked rocks after the second game of the season, and I conceded my bet with Fish in October – weeks before the actual game. Sure enough, the Wolverines got spanked by the Nittany Lions, and I was going to wear the blue and white.
Fish and his wife (also a PSU alum) told me they were going to paint my face, and make me wear every Penn State item they had in their house. They are such rabid fans that they considering painting “We Love Joe Pa” on their roof. So naturally, I was dreading this event. Then it hit me: The appendectomy. After undergoing surgery, being stuck in a hospital for four days, and spending two weeks of recovery, he would let me slide on the bet, right?
Wrong.
The sneaky bastard made me dress up for Thanksgiving! I was a Happy Valley Turkey. Fish and Mrs. Fish brought out a garbage bag full of everything from hats to short-shorts. They paraded it in front of me while laughing, until I finally said, “Just hit me with it. Whatever you have, I’ll wear.”
The holiday season must have gotten to them – it was either that or the egg nog – but they spared me. I needed to wear a hat, a hockey jersey (which is really nice), and the PSU slippers (which were really comfortable). Of course, in keeping with tradition, I am publishing the photo for everyone’s amusement . . . and yes, I think I look fat in the picture. Lousy Thanksgiving! Enjoy.

While I share your dislike of PSU, Wyatt, I’d still like to see you in a BUCKEYES jersey.
Holding Brutus.
Hmmmm…..
And, just so you know, it took every ounce of restraint I had to not send a Brutus cuddle toy to your kids!!!
