“Being Annoying” Now Illegal In Michigan

By Wyatt Earp | December 23, 2008

Matthew Lesko: Brighton's Most Wanted.

Matthew Lesko: Brighton's Most Wanted.

Mental note: Never go to Brighton, Michigan. They probably have a dozen warrants out for me there.

BRIGHTON, Mich. — Since when did being annoying become a crime? Since Brighton City Council approved a public conduct code Monday night, which includes fining someone up to $500 for being annoying.

One section of the bill reads, “It shall be unlawful for a person to engage in a course of conduct or repeatedly commit acts that alarm or seriously annoy another person and that serve no legitimate purpose.”

The bill also states it’s unlawful for anyone to insult, accost, molest or otherwise annoy any person in public.

Brighton officials said the ordinance would be subjective and the call will be made by police officers. (H/T - WDIV Detroit)

Easily Lost sent this to me. I guess she’s afraid I’ll be arrested . . . or hopeful. I am, however, personally sending the following people airline tickets to Brighton:

1. Billy Mays
2. Captain America
3. Ty Pennington
4. The “ShamWow” Guy
5. The cast of Jon & Kate Plus 8

You can’t be annoying in MI? My sister (who lives up there) had better watch out!

Oh wait, you said it was illegal to be annoying, not a raging bitch!

Pleads the fifth. Besides, I have always found it safest to keep as much distant between me and the Officer I am aggravating. Michigan is way too close :P

    They are all good choices.

I thought Randal Graves would be on that list somewhere.

Can’t comment about Brighton Mich although it sounds a good place for me to avoid, especially if I am in a pedantic mood.

Brighton England is definitely a place to avoid, at least at night. A seaside town on the South Coast, favoured by the Prince Regent (”Prinny” to his friends) around the time you were having a bit of bother with how to make tea properly. (A hint, always heat up the harbour first before you add the tea and don’t use lukewarm water.)

Anyway, Brighton England is the only place I have ever been propositioned by a person of the night. Usually, I am careful to be tucked up in bed. Unfortunately, it was a “man”. Right put me off the place it did!

    best wishes

Promise not to be too annoying in the New Year (that’s one NY resultion that ain’t gonner stick!)

Here’s a Christmas Eve paradox for you: Can the city of Brighton and/or the city council be charged under this statute for writing an annoying and probably unconstitutional law?

You forgot Flo from the Progressive commericals.

GroovyVic - That’s not Christmas language, dear. :)

E.L. - Well, since I am in Philly, you need to be in Kabul, Afghanistan. Heh.

Admiral - Not yet. He’ll take back my present.

Alan B - Well, in our defense the Boston Tea Party was held by Bostonians. Most Americans consider them dullards. *ducks Boston readers’ flying shoes*

Jim - Wow, that’s a great question! Kudos, sir!

Rick - One of my readers jumped to her aid when I said she wasn’t attractive, so I left her out.
