Happy Mother’s Day!

By Wyatt Earp | May 10, 2009

happy_mothers_dayOkay, it’s time for the semi-serious post. Today is Mother’s Day, a day to say thank you to Mom for carrying you for nine months, giving birth to you, and putting up with all of your crap ever since. Obviously, my mother is a saint, because I am a complete and utter disappointment. Rarely does my mom call me and say, “Thank you, Wyatt, for being such a cynical, sarcastic bastard.”

Okay, it happened once, but I think she was drunk when she called. Heh.

In all seriousness, I wanted to wish my Mom a Happy Mother’s Day, since I won’t be seeing her on her special day. Oh, she’ll be having dinner here at Casa de Earp (along with my Mother-in-Law) but I will be working the 3p-11p shift. Dang. Oh well, I hope Mrs. Earp, my mom, and mom-in-law have a terrific day, anyway.

Similarly, I wanted to wish a terrific Mother’s Day to all of the moms in my sidebar*. Specifically, Momster, Pam, Ala, Deanna, Dorkelina, DragonLady, GroovyVic, Kim, Daisy, McPeak Mama, Uber, Snigs, H20, and The British Bird.

Have a terrific day, ladies!

* If your name isn’t listed, I apologize. I only posted the bloggers who I know have children.

Happy Mother’s Day to all to whom it applies!

Over here, Mother’s Day is a “Variable Feast” falling on the 4th Sunday of Lent or 3 weeks before Easter Sunday.
Hence, Mothering Sunday can fall anytime between 1st March and 4th April.

It is believed to have originated from the 16th century Christian practice of visiting one’s mother’s church annually, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day.

As a result of secularization, it is now principally used to show appreciation to one’s mother, although it is still recognized in the historical sense by some churches, with attention paid to Mary the mother of Jesus Christ as well as the traditional concept ‘Mother Church’.

Wyatt, my best to your mom, and to your lady!

I was in Elementary school one day when I started coughing up blood - gallons of it, I thought. The school called the local rescue squad and then called my mom at work, 20 miles away.

The Ambulance and my mom arrived at roughly the same moment! I think on that day, with my mom behind the wheel, our beat up POS family sedan could have outrun anything on the track at Darlington last night!

    Love ya, Mom! :)

I got to see my Mom up in the coal regions today, but I won’t see my wife until after work (missed her in my 5-minute stop at home before heading out to work). Glad I did, since my brother who usually appears for Mother’s Day was in Carolina with three of his former colleagues — all of whom are now being treated for some kind of cancer (three different types, none apparently work-related — just very weird). The rest of the clan lives near Mom’s house and were headed by in the evening.
To the Earp moms and to all moms here — the best to you.
