Happy Birthday, Great One!

Wayne Gretzky Edmonton OilersThere are few people left in this world who I consider heroes. Even fewer populate the world of sports.

Wayne Gretzky is one of those heroes.

His #99 Edmonton Oilers jersey was the first hockey jersey I ever owned. My parents bought it for me during a trip to Quebec. I adopted his number when I played lacrosse and hockey, not because I had his talent – I don’t – but because I wanted to emulate his work ethic.

Today, the Great One is celebrating his 52nd birthday.

He is the leading point-scorer in NHL history, with more assists than any other player has points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, he tallied over 100 points in 16 professional seasons, 14 of them consecutive. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records, and six All-Star records.

Class act on and off the ice. If you’re looking for a sports hero, look no further.

I agree, Wyatt. Wayne Gretzky is a worthy idol for all sports fans.
I am not a hockey fan but when Gretzky was doing his thing in Edmonton I came t-h-i-s close to becoming one. When he moved on to the Rangers the temptation was there. His skills complimented those on the ice with him in ways that are unimaginable. He was the Pele of the rink. And off the ice? He was always a gentleman. I can not recall his ever saying anything negative about an opponent.

If you’re ever in the Niagara Canada region, stop by his winery. He makes better booze than Dan Akroyd and you might get the chance to bitch at him about the 1993 game 7 against Toronto like I did.

Hawt wife (with a bit of a gambling problem) check and check! Even HAWTER daughter, bonus checks on that one! Seems to be an all-around good guy, but definitely the GREATEST in hockey. Not bad for a very average skater.

I don’t follow hockey but “he has more asssists than the total points of any other player”!

    Wow, that is phenomenal.

I love my Kings Gretzky jesey. Especially because it is in the old purple and yellow scheme. And when you said happy birthday Great One, thought you had someone else in mind…

    Wyatt:
I have to admit to a love/hate feeling towards Gretsky.
He always played his heart out, and was utterly unbelieveable on the ice…but he ALSO beat the FLYERS (then a much better team) back then…
If Edmonton played ANYONE else, I rooted for him…loudly!

Now, if you want to do a spot on BERNIE PARENT…

    ;)

Roll safe (and no high-sticking) out there
