Occupy The Crease Invades Switzerland

For those of you who wonder why I’m a hockey fan, this story may ‘splain it.
The 2014 IIHF world championship tournament is scheduled to be held in Belarus. The decision was blasted by those claiming the event shouldn’t be hosted by a nation with “ongoing human rights violations.” It’s a decision that’s caused widespread protest [from people] who want to see the IIHF’s plans suspended to help expose corruption by President Alexander Lukashenko.
A Ukrainian feminist group named Femen organized a game of 2-on-2 “street hockey” in front of the IIHF headquarters in Switzerland. A game of topless street hockey. Well, they got our attention.
Yeah, they got mine, too, but I would have expected them to protest the wanton (yet delicious) violence associated with the game. Oh well, I guess even hot naked protestors can be misguided.

Femen isn’t Occupy and that’s not America they are protesting. When they protest human rights violations in Belarus, they aren’t whining and making stuff up. It was a Republican Congress that originated sanctions against Belarus, along with the Bush administration. Condi Rice called it “the last true remaining dictatorship in the heart of Europe”. Belarus’s KGB kidnapped Americans in London, and held them until sanctions were eased. Their treatment of their own people is genuine mass arrests, genuine torture. Femen goes topless because it gets them enough international attention that they haven’t just been “disappeared”, but they are arrested and roughed up often. If they wore shirts you’d never have heard from them again.
Of course they’re not protesting the “violence” in hockey, they’re busy with the kind of shit Dick Winters fought.
I understand why you get used to hippie Occupy bullshit and when you see a crazy-looking protester you don’t bother to check out who they are and what they’re saying, but you’re seriously on the wrong side with this one. The closest thing to support Belarus gets is Democratic Underground claiming sanctions show Bush Administration hypocrisy for not having them on the UAE too.
Did you hear that three of these girls were then rounded up by the Ukranian KGB and taken out to the boonies, stripped and left on their own. Civil disobedience has its price.
