Want your GPS to avoid the ghetto? There’s an app for that!
Microsoft has been granted a patent for its “avoid ghetto” feature for GPS devices. Microsoft’s patent states that a route can be plotted for pedestrians to avoid an “unsafe neighborhood or being in an open area that is subject to harsh temperatures.”
Created for mobile phones, the technology uses the latest crime statistics and weather data and includes them when calculating a route. (H/T – Smite)
Call me a racist if you must, but this is the greatest app ever created.

If it works as well as all their other products, I anticipate the carjackers and muggers will have a banner year.
In the 70′s I remember tourist leaflets in Hawaii with maps which told you to stay out of certain areas do to the high crime stats.
I love how north Philly is the pic for the post.
…oh, and – Raciiiist!!!! heh.
A co-worker sent me an e-mail awhile ago with ‘liberal speak’ terminology and the corresponding ‘conservative’ translation next to it. For ‘diversified community neighborhood’ it translated to..high crime area.
Sally Anne – Zing!
LDIV – There’s crime in Hawaii? Who knew?
Smite – Not that there are ghettos in North Philly.
Jon – Nicely done.
Im confused….. why would an app avoiding neighborhoods using crime statistics be racist?
I doubt it would be any particular race(s) that would be avoided more than any other….
Wyatt:
So, my next question would logically be:
“Then I suppose they have an AVOID DETROIT APP?”
(Guess the Griswolds will LOVE this one)
Roll safe (and ghetto-free) out there.
That way you don’t end up with the words “Honky Lips” painted across your station wagon (name the movie!).
Kerri – There are bad white, black, Asian, and Latino neighborhoods in Philly. I guess some people will cry racism for every one listed.
Bob G. – Avoid Camden!
DL474 – Vacation! Never go to East St. Louis.
