Teachers Boycott Back To School Night

By Wyatt Earp | September 21, 2010

In our most recent contract, the city removed a decades-old residency rule, which required police officers to live inside the city limits. Now that the clause is gone, a lot of cops are evacuating the city. The most-cited reason? “The schools are better in the suburbs.”

Think so, huh? Then you better not read this. It’s a story that makes me just laugh and laugh.

Claudia reports that not one single teacher showed up for this important night at Carl Sandburg Junior High, or at the other two schools in this district. Approximately 150 parents showed up to meet the teachers. Instead, they were given a speech by the school’s principal.

Neshaminy School Board President Ritchie Webb added, “They’re bringing the children in as a pawn into an adult negotiating game, unfortunately.”

Teachers in the district are currently “working to contract” in their third school year without a new employment deal. The teachers’ union does not want to pay for health benefits. The school board says it does not have the money to pay for such benefits. Both sides are still far apart.

I’m not going to blindly blast all teachers here. Mrs. Earp was a teacher in the Philly School District. I will, however, blast these particular teachers for being so small-minded that they couldn’t even show up to Back to School Night. They can’t take an hour out of their “busy” day to meet with parents? Who are you think you are, Congress?

If Neshaminy had any stones, they would fire the lot of them.

    1. It’s Levittown…enough said.

    2. They don’t want to pay for health benefits – too bad; I’ll bet 99% of the families in that school district contribute to their own health benefits. F-ing union!

Thank God I’m in Central Bucks.

I concur, ala Reagan and the air traffic controllers.

I’ve got no prob with the union vs. the school board beef,
but the teachers have also refused college recommendations for the students as well as after school help; neither of which would have adversely affected their position in their contract negotiations.

The students are pawns, or hostages even, in a game
    that allows them no moves.

There are PLENTY of people out of work; I think it’s possible to hire teachers who can think for themselves and not let some union agenda destroy the very reason that they are employed.

The teachers’ union does not want to pay for health benefits.

God forbid that members of the teachers’ union should have to stoop to paying their own way like the rest of us working slobs.

“They can’t take an hour out of their “busy” day to meet with parents? ”

They were too busy campaigning for democrats.

Randal – Central Bucks: No issues there.

JT – Teacher’s Unions are some of the worst around. We need Chris Christie to go in there and bust heads.

John D – What, we shouldn’t pay for our own and that of our teachers? /snark

Robert B – Then why the beef over health costs. ObamaCare is going to save us money, right . . .

My two cents is I am tired of hearing about bad schools and bad teachers. Schools & teachers can only do so much. The most important component to raising a successful kid is a good parent.

In this case, the teachers should bite the bad economy bullet just like the rest of us. But we should start going after the bad crappy parents- I have heard of some school districts where more teachers show up than parents on parents-teachers night.

Hell, I don’t want to pay for my medical benefits either. And I want Obama to pay my mortgage. I say give the teachers 1 week to step into line or they are all out on their ears.

Here we had that teachers union make a big stink and do job slow downs and protest pickets and threaten to go on strike and right before the deadline the district caved. A month later all the faculty parking lots had new BMW’s and Lexus and Volvo’s. Ya they were starving to death.

AJ – Hold parents accountable? You’re living in a fantasy world, man!!! /snark

Ingineer66 – Some school districts fare better than others, obviously, but the not paying for health insurance crap is just that: crap.

Kim – Does your husband argue with you and vice-versa?

Robbie – They’re the ones getting the shaft, and no one cares.
