Your Tax Dollars At Work

By Wyatt Earp | June 21, 2010

Just in case any of my readers in Connecticut thought your tax dollars couldn’t be wasted any more recklessly, I give you this story out of Hartford. Apparently, a federal judge will hear a lawsuit on whether cheerleading can be considered a sport. Seriously.

America, we are so frakked.

A federal judge is being asked to decide whether cheerleading can be counted as a sport by schools looking for ways to meet gender-equity requirements.

The issue is part of a lawsuit filed by five members of the volleyball team at Connecticut’s Quinnipiac University and coach Robin Sparks last year after the school decided in a budgetary move to eliminate women’s volleyball in favor of a competitive cheer squad.

Judge Stefan Underhill also will be asked to decide whether Quinnipiac improperly manipulates the size of the rosters of its other teams to get around complying with Title IX, the 1972 federal law that mandates equal opportunities for men and women in athletics.

Personally, I think it should be considered a sport . . .

But that’s just me.

So if it becomes a sport, then it too will require a cheerleading team, then that cheerleading team will require cheerleaders, who themselves will require cheerleaders ad infinitium like bacteria multiplying endlessly. Pass the duct tape please.

Damn I did not know that Oregon’s cheerleaders were so hot. Most women in Eugene have hairy legs.
Cheer-leading should be considered a sport. With all the gymnastics type moves and stunts they do nowadays there are about as many injuries as there are in football.

I work at a University and cheerleading is indeed a sport here in the Midwest. They have camps, tryouts, competitions, a certain GPA must be maintained and they give $$$$ scholarships. They have as many injuries per participants and basketball and football. It would make sense that it has now hit the high school circuit with middle school probably not far behind.

Jon – I hereby volunteer to inspect this influx of nubile young cheerleaders.

Ingineer66 – They definitely work up a sweat. Sorry, I blacked out there for a minute.

MeToo – I’m not questioning it’s “sport” status, but to literally make a federal case about it? Who is paying for the court costs?

Aw, come on, Wyatt. Who always end up bending over and paying for it in the end?! Pun intended. The good, ole American taxpayer. Kind of like Oliver Twist “Please, sir may I have some more?”

Actually, I had an idea Connecticut was pretty much frakked before the whole cheerleading thing when soon-to-be-former Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez was found guilty on multiple counts of extortion, misconduct, fabricating evidence and bribery.

Gosh….if you can’t trust a Puerto Rican gang member/sepratist turned ‘community organizer’ these days, who CAN you trust?

If you need a inspecting partner. I will help.

Does that mean he’s ready for to announce for U.S. Senate?

I know a former Ducks cheerleader (she graduated in 09). She is, indeed, smokin’.

MeToo – Cheerleaders? Bending over? I’ll be in my bunk!

Fenway – At least Obama wasn’t a gang member. Who would let him join their gang?

Rick – I’ll add you to the list.

JCM – Or at least the House.

Dixie – And to think the USC babes get all the press.

For cheerleaders, they’re wearing too much. (chuckle)

It is all about the money. Follow the $ boys and girls. Those volleyball players just don’t generate enough $. They better get with the program. I’ll bet if they cut down on the costumes like the beach voilleyball players it would be a number one sport in no time. I just luv tall girls in skimpy costumes. MUD

    Dixie – My thoughts exactly.

Ingineer66 – Thank God for that!

MUD – The uniforms for college volleyball players are unbelievably hot. Tight spandex? Yeah, I’ll watch.

Odd, Penn and Teller [un]covered this just a couple of weeks ago.

The money: not a sport, no Title IX. Also, one company just about controls everything, not all that well – except for raking in moolah.

The real problem: not a sport, no regulation. No provision for requiring anyone training or competing (yes, competing) to know so much as how to apply a Band-Aid[tm], despite injury rates that make football games look like chess matches. Any Little League team run the way cheerleading is would be shut down in a heartbeat.
