Humpday History Highlight

By Wyatt Earp | May 5, 2010

Mexican babe Salma Hayek

I am combining ideas today. I figure I could post a babe while also writing about Cinco de Mayo. It’s a dos-fer!

In 1861, the liberal Mexican Benito Juarez became president of a country in financial ruin, and he was forced to default on his debts to European governments. In response, France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large French force and driving President Juarez and his government into retreat.

6,000 French troops under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles. Juarez rounded up a rag-tag force of loyal men and sent them to Puebla. Led by Texas-born General Zaragoza, the 2,000 Mexicans fortified the town and prepared for the French assault. On the fifth of May, 1862, Lorencez drew his army, well-provisioned and supported by heavy artillery, before the city of Puebla and began their assault from the north. The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated they had lost nearly 500 soldiers to the fewer than 100 Mexicans killed.

Today, Mexicans celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla as Cinco de Mayo, a national holiday in Mexico.

And it is usually “celebrated” like Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated . . . with lost and lots of cervezas!

There’s another photo below the fold.

Because when we talk about Mexican babes, I have to post a picture of SI Swimsuit Supermodel Elsa Benitez!

De nada!

Happy Cinco de Mayo, but you still can’t have Texas, or Arizona or New mexico back, even if you’ve got a good start.

Nothing like Cinco de Mayo to up the sales of tequila. I think that is my favorite Mexican export sans the worm.

I am ashamed to admit that when stationed at Camp Pendelton for 16 months (‘70 – ‘71), never once did I go with the other guys down to TJ Mexico. Have never been to Mexico, no desire to ever go. Since my sign is Cancer…wherever I am is where I want to be, why leave? LOL

MeToo – True story. I was at a college lacrosse party in 1991. The guys were passing around liquor bottles filled with beer, because the cups were gone. I was feeling fine, when a tequila bottle came to me. I just started to chug . . . until I realized the bottle actually had tequila in it. I ran to the second floor window, opened it, and threw up . . . from two stories above.

Jon – I went to Puerto Rico when I was in high school. Much nicer than I thought it would be. Mexico? No desire.

The Germans also have holidays where they celebrate defeating the French: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday…

Also, I would boil Salma Hayek’s underwear and drink the broth.

Ambulance Driver..Don’t know if you are old enough to have enjoyed the National Lampoon Issue on…Ethnics.
Gawd that was decades ago… anyway, in one portion of the magazine was a table of good and bad points of the many ethnics included.
For the Germans their best good point was listed as…..They kill lots of French.
Being the national lampoon, of course, under the French
listing was…They kill lots of Germans.

AD – Okay, that’s the funniest comment of the day!

Jon – I can’t wait until Germany gets drunk and decides to invade Poland.

I have a bottle of Corona and a big juicy lime waiting for me at home tonight.

My wife is half Mexican but, we really don’t do much for Cinco de Mayo.

She does make awesome Chile Achilles though.

And Salma Hayek is invited of course.

Wyatt, I like your thoughts on Jon’s comment. I was just talking about that yesterday. The illegals may want to rethink their plan to invade the US to take it over. The last time Mexico invaded the US, they lost half of their country. We may get pissed and make Baja and the Yucatan US States.

I love celebrating French military defeats- by the way, I’d celebrate by watching (prior to vampire stuff). I think that’s the best dance scene in any movie.

Sultry latina? Well-tanned caucasian girl? You make the call!

Also, apparently Selma Hayek is half Lebanese. Somebody told me that Hayek is a pretty common surname over there, and it’s not unkown for them to have migrated to Latin America. Still, that’s a whole lotta sultry!
