It’s Blue Thursday In Philadelphia

By Wyatt Earp | March 5, 2009

blue-thursdayThanks much to Doubleplusundead and Skye for reminding me. The kids have been sick, and I completely forgot today was Thursday.

So, what is Blue Thursday? Here’s an explanation from 1210-AM WPHT, the originators of the event:

Thursday, March 5, 2009 is “Blue Thursday,” a special day created and promoted by Dom Giordano and The Big Talker 1210, WPHT. Dom is asking listeners from all over the Delaware Valley to show their support for police officers who are increasingly under fire from armed criminals on our streets. Show your support by wearing blue, or decorate your car, home, or place of business with blue ribbons, encouraging everyone you know to do the same and show support for police officers throughout the region on “Blue Thursday”. Several Philadelphia landmarks have pledged their support by turning their lights to blue on Thursday evening including: Benjamin Franklin Bridge, Boathouse Row, Cira Center and Liberty One.

“Blue Thursday” coincides with the next Joey Vento’s Geno’s Steaks fund raiser for the families of fallen Philadelphia Police Officers. Joey Vento will again donate all dollars generated by sales of his famous cheese steaks from 10 AM on Thursday, March 5th until 6 AM on Friday March 6th. Previous individual Geno’s fund raising efforts have raised more than $50,000.

WPHT is also starting a “Salute-A-Cop” promotion, where people can recognize officers for excellence on the job.

It’s a pretty nice gesture from WPHT, the home of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. I’ll reserve my comments on despicable morning guy Michael Smerconish.

  1. Sssteve says:

Wyatt, you guys need all the support you can get! That is nice what they are doing!

btw, send me an e-mail my laptop crashed and I don’t have your e-mail anymore

  2. bob (either orr) says:

    Dom G — class act.

  3. Wyatt Earp says:

    Sssteve – Will do!

Bob – Agreed. I despise Smerconish, but Dom is a good guy.

  4. Mike47 says:

Suddenly I’m hungry for blueberry donuts.

  5. Doghouse says:

Nice to see some respect shown your way.

  6. Wyatt Earp says:

    Mike47 – I love blueberry donuts. I’m a cop, ya know!

Doghouse – It’ll be nice if I see people participating. We certainly deserve some good vibes for a change.

  7. leoni2 says:

That is a class move on wpht’s part. The weird thing is, I’d been supporting the guys in blue all day and didn’t know about it, as I’m presently wearing a blue sleveless sweather.

  8. I’m wearing blue jeans and a Penn State sweatshirt. I didn’t know about this, but always happy to support.

  9. Wyatt Earp says:

Leoni2 – Well, you’ve been nothing but supportive here, and I truly appreciate it.

Prof – Take that off. I’ll send you a Michigan jersey. :)

  10. RT says:

There is no way to word this without sounding weird, so “sorry” up front.

The funeral home in our town is owned by the one that conducts the services for those who lose their lives in service for Philadelphia. Their sign was decorated with large, blue ribbons. It was nice to see, as I wasn’t sure if the sentiment would extend over the bridge. We might be separated by a river, but this area is very much a part of what it is to be a Philadelphian. :)

  11. Jay says:

Hat’s off to Dom Giordano. He created the Salute-A-Cop event years ago at WWDB and has always been a friend to the men and women in blue. He’s the best thing on 1210.

  12. Wyatt Earp says:

RT – Personally, I don’t care where the support comes from, as long as it’s there. Thanks to New Jersey.

Jay – He is truly one of the good guys.

  13. totally missed that posting for Thursday, but unknowingly was supportive either way as i’m in blue every day.

  14. Glocksman says:

Locally, we have the police and fire departments squaring off in a ‘Guns versus Hoses’ boxing competition.

    event website.

While the money raised goes for non law enforcement charities, the efforts of the local police and firemen in helping out is heartwarming.

Oh, and Wyatt you really should consider leaving Philly and working as a cop out here in ‘flyover country’.

Keep in mind that while the salaries may not seem all that impressive, most of the local departments issue take home cars to officers and that a nice house in a good area of the city goes for less than $200k and you can rent a decent 3BR apartment for less than $700/month.

Never mind that fact that Indiana has some of the best gun laws in the country.
