Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Net Approved
By Wyatt Earp | October 11, 2008
A “suicide net?” Are you frakkin’ kidding me? This, my friends, is just another reason why San Francisco needs to be completely shunned by every American.
SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden Gate District Board of Directors voted 14-to-1 Friday to approve the installation of a controversial net below the famed structure to prevent suicides, bridge officials said.
The vote by the 16-member board was certain to spark a controversy after an online poll conducted by the bridge district found that half of 4,147 Bay Area residents who responded preferred that no suicide barrier in any form be built.
About 32 percent were nearly evenly divided in favor of adding another eight feet to the existing 4-foot railing on the bridge or installing a horizontal net system below the span to catch jumpers as their first choice.
How much is this hemp-clouded idea going to cost, you ask?
It will cost $78,016 a year to maintain a net beneath the bridge and would have cost between $429,000 and $466,000 to maintain the rail extension options, according to the report revealed earlier this month.
And who will get stuck footing that bill? Why the taxpayers, of course! Serves them right: most of them are liberal Democrats – they elected Nancy Pelosi, remember – and they rarely oppose higher taxes.
The California Highway Patrol expressed “significant concerns” with the net system and the safety of rescuers who try to recover bridge jumpers in the net, according to the report.
The Marin County coroner’s office released a report last year stating more than 1,250 people have jumped from the bridge since it opened 1937. Other estimates say 1,300 people have jumped to their deaths. (H/T – KTVU)
Now, before you send me more hate mail, hear me out. I have extensive experience dealing with suicidal people, and I can assure you this: if they want to kill themselves, they WILL find a way to do it. Those who consider jumping from the Golden Gate will just try something else. This suicide net will do little, if anything, to solve the problem.
This idiotic plan is just a “feel good” measure designed to lighten the wallets of the citizens.

All they will do is jump into the net, then climb over the edge of the net to complete the job… Agree Wyatt, it is another rip-off of the public, but it will make the idjits in office feel better. Any bets on whether it actually reduces suicides? I’ve got $20 that says not

Let them build the catch net under the bridge, once a month flip the net over and feed the fish
I mean how can anyone stand in the way of a 2-fer win, population control and happy fish.

It may even encourage thrill seekers to jump into the net.
It’s happened in stadiums….

Likewise with the experience (bridge jumpers especially).
The CHP is correct…Who gets to climb down into the nets to try and drag a now agitated, possibly injured nut job back to the bridge??? The Firemen of course.
Now how much will the Fire Departments budget be increased to provide the training for these obviously extremely dangerous maneuver?
My guess…ZERO!
Let the J.O.’s who voted for this horsesh*t climb down there and get them. I bet after the first time they had to do it those nets would suddenly have giant holes in them.
