The Phillies: Getting A Lot Of “Hits”
By Wyatt Earp | September 24, 2008
After the terrible news of the last day and a half, I needed something to make me laugh. Of course, my snarky humor demands that I laugh at something that may not considered funny be everyone, but, trust me: this is pure gold.
During many home games, the Phillies have a theme for the event. It could be a giveaway day, a concert, or a special cause for the day. Tonight is “Domestic Violence Night” at the Philadelphia Phillies game. Here is a description from their website:
HopeLine® phone collection to benefit survivors of domestic violence in the Philadelphia tri-state region. Phillies fans can bring their no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment (from any carrier) and deposit them in the HopeLine collection bins at the First Base, Third Base or Left Field Gates. Collection in partnership with Women Against Abuse and Verizon Wireless.
Okay, I think we can all agree that this is a good cause. Here’s where it gets funny, though. Are you ready?
Tonight’s Phillies starting pitcher is Brett Myers.
For those of you not from the area, here is why this story is hilarious. In 2006, Myers was arrested for beating his wife in Boston. The district attorney’s office field charges, but the case was dismissed when Myers’ wife Kim declined to prosecute.
And, in their infinite wisdom, the Phillies decided to start their “ace” abuser. Classic. For his wife’s sake, I hope he pitches well.

So can they just throw their phones and equipment AT Myers? That would accomplish a double purpose. Helping the charity and making all victims feel better.

Why does this not surprise me that it went right over management’s head (or maybe through, with the wind)…

Deanna - In the 7th inning, the Phillies are losing, 9-3. I hope Kim Myers is loading up the truck and moving to Beverly.
Old NFO - Didn’t surprise me, either. Stupid, stupid move.

The Phillies are being beat like a rented mule right now. Coincidence? I think not.
