Philadelphia’s “Weekend Of Peace”
By Wyatt Earp | August 1, 2008
Great idea. Will it save lives this weekend? Probably not.
When it comes to gun violence in the inner-city, there’s blame and then there’s responsibility.
And organizers of this weekend’s citywide “Weekend of Peace” hope that neighbors from all walks of life and all communities will “recognize there’s a problem going on.”
“We’re hoping people come out on Saturday and take the initiative to become responsible adults, parents and children,” said organizer Calvin Johnson, who created the “Weekend of Peace” five years ago with his brother.
“It really is just a group of individuals and community groups that came together knowing that violence was out of hand.
“We are going to make people aware and help them step up in creating and maintaining a violence-free community,” he said. (H/T – The Philadelphia Daily News)
Not to be even more sarcastic and cynical than I already am, but I guarantee you there will be more than one homicide during this “Weekend of Peace.” I’ll post an update at the end of the weekend. Stay tuned.

I was about to say, how many murders happen in the Soviet of Philly for the “Weekend of Peace”?
If peace is all they want the farms in York county are nice and quiet, but I never heard silence in Philadelphia – but then the 82d Airborne Association Conventions were always why I was in town. We could always hope there will be no murders this weekend, but then stupid would have to be sleeping wouldn’t he? Still it is to be wished for, or do they just want a parade?
Yeah, good luck with that one. These “leaders” must live in a part of Philly that is gated or something. Duh.
Hey, Wyatt.
Thought about you when I read this.
Last year the L.A. City Council passed a bill calling for a moratorium on homicide. It didn’t work.
Maybe they should have offered Cheezy Poofs with the bill.
DPU – The over-under is four. Place yer bets!
Earl – Probably a little of both.
RT – They do. It’s called Chestnut Hill and East Falls.
Serr8d – Completely despicable, and par for the course for our DHS.
DesertSage – I heard about the L.A. moratorium. Nice try, hippies!
I will be interested on the results of this great plan.
Well, I can get behind that, if that’s what it really means, as opposed to waving giant puppet heads or having candlelight vigils.
Admiral – It’s Sunday afternoon, and no reports of homicides yet. Wow. Of course, there have been 7 stabbings and 20+ shooting incidents . . .
Prof – Candlelight vigils are the biggest sham since one-hour martinizing.
In re your WPVI update, I loved the idiocy of the commenter complaining that the police never show up in time to stop such incidents. I suppose he has an armed LEO with him 24_7 and thinks everyone else should, too. Worth a chuckle, until you realise that is the attitude of too many politicians as well as other eedjuts.
Teqjack – The best part of that is if the media knew how many officers were actually on patrol at any given hour, there would be rioting in the streets. The number Police HQ gives is vastly different than the real number. Believe it.
