Off-Duty Officer Points Gun At Man, Dog?

By Wyatt Earp | July 14, 2008

Another black eye for the Philadelphia Police Department:

A Northeast Philadelphia man is in the hospital after an off-duty Philadelphia police officer allegedly pulled a gun on him while he was walking his dog.

Seventy-four-year-old Sid Davidson was walking his pit-bull, Casper, near his house in the 1200 block of Deveraux Avenue. His family says a neighbor got mad that Casper was sniffing in a neighbor’s yard and yelled out the window.

Davidson continued to walk with his dog, but when he passed the house on his way home, the neighbor came down the walkway, according to Davidson’s daughter, Stacey Santore:

“My dad said ‘don’t come any closer, don’t come too close.’ At that point the man said I’m a police officer and pulled out a gun.”

She says the man pointed the gun at Davidson and then at the dog. Davidson has a history of heart problems and he’s being kept at Nazareth Hospital for the next few days for observation. (KYW1060)

I hope to God this story isn’t true, and I know this is just one side. Either way, there is a pit bull involved, and Lord knows what kind of trouble they can be – especially in this town. Stay tuned.

It’s apparent there’s a LOT being left out.

I agree with Bloviating Zeppelin. Something seems to be missing, like what happened between the gun being show and the mentioning of the guy’s heart history. It’s like someone is hiding the details to make the guy look even worst then he is.

BZ – I agree. Since when does the local press say anything good (or fair) about a police officer?

Leoni2 – Oh come on, the Philly media wouldn’t do that! /Snark.

    Oh yes they would. Seriously.

One thing I try to keep in mind when reading stories like this is that cops are individuals like the rest of us are.

In other words, there’s good ones, bad ones, and mediocre ones.

The real test of a police department is how willing they are to dispose of the bad ones when they’re brought to light.

That said, I don’t have nearly enough information to make an informed judgment call one way or another.
