The 2009 NHL Winter Classic

By Wyatt Earp | January 1, 2009

Simply. Awesome.

Simply. Awesome.

In one hour, the NHL’s 2009 Winter Classic will begin . . . and I cannot wait. The game will be held outdoors at Wrigley Field in Chicago, and will feature a game between the Detroit Red Wings and the hometown Blackhawks.

Last year’s Winter Classic saw the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Buffalo Sabres in a shootout inside Ralph Wilson Stadium. Oh, they also played in a heavy snowstorm. It was one of the most entertaining hockey games I have ever seen.

This year’s game should not see much (if any) snow, but the simple fact that they will be playing at “The Friendly Confines” is enough to get me stoked. I don’t have a horse in this race - I am fairly indifferent to both teams - but I will watch as much of the game that I can before heading off to work. Trust me, you’ll want to see this game, as well, even if you’re not the biggest fan of ice hockey.

The game starts at 1pm on NBC. Check it out.

Oh, and here’s a time-lapse of the workers setting up the rink:

Let’s go Blackhawks!

I’m excited! I watched last year and it was a lot of fun to watch.

I think they should do a Rangers versus Devils, Bruins, or Flyers matchup.

When I was reading about this, the article stated that there were 240,000+ requests for tickets. The fans should be really pumped, which will add to the excitement. :)

Not surprising. Hockey is back in a big way in the Second City.

I just got home. I recorded it, though.

RT - It was a great game. The best moment? When the Red Wing forward was checked head-over-heels into the Chicago bench in the first period. Awesome!

Prof - It was an okay game, but the overall event was outstanding.

And then they got called for too many men on the ice! HA! I loved that.
