Lock And Load

By Wyatt Earp | December 19, 2008

By the time you read this, I may already be wearing my ballistic vest.

Okay, by the time you read this, I will definitely be wearing my ballistic vest, because today I am working overtime. And this is not just any OT; this is patrol OT! It’s one of the few times of the year where the city pays us detectives an exorbitant amount of money to jump in an unmarked car, ride the city streets, and kick up some criminals, thugs, and unwed mothers.

Now, for the record, uniformed patrol was tedious at times. Answering calls for disorderly crowds and toenail fungus get old quicker than Helen Thomas. In this case, however, my partner and I are pretty much given a wide berth. We can kick in doors for warrant service, answer priority radio calls, or just sit silently across from a busy corner and hope for someone to get naked. It’s kickass!

With any luck, I’ll have a decent story or two for tomorrow. Of course, it’s supposed to rain all day, and that usually keeps some of the more dangerous toads inside. That’ll make the missus happy, but I am really hoping for some adrenaline boosts.

Wish us luck.

UPDATE: Well, it was pretty uneventful. It rained cats and dogs, we froze our asses off in an unmarked car with no heat, and didn’t unholster our weapons once. Dang.

The OT in the next check will be nice, though.

Stay safe. You don’t have a backup blogger.

If you get hurt, I’ll be right behind your Mrs. waiting to kick your butt. Stay safe, and I truly hope it’s a very quiet shift.

If I told you once I told you a thousand times…HOLLOW POINTS!
Don’t forget your back up piece either. Or your throwaway.
Damn it’s tough when they leave the nest.
    Be safe buddy.

Hope it was uneventful, yet not boring. Guess the two don’t go hand in hand; however, we’d rather have you safe. :)

    E.L. - Thanks. It was.

    Old NFO - Always.

    Captain - Done and done!

RT - It was uneventful AND boring.

    DL474 - Thanks!

More importantly, it was uneventful, and boring and safe!

Watch out for those Arnentine Tango women - the only reason they wrap their legs around you on the dancefloor is to feel the size of your wallet!

Are you out again before Christmas?
    How about New Year??

We’re on the side of the good guys over here.

Yeah, OT shifts only get to me on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Worked Thanksgiving, was quiet, might work Christmas, just not Christmas eve.

At least I’m a boss, so I get to go to all the calls. And all our cars have heat, at least.
