Big Brown Bites The Big One

By Wyatt Earp | June 7, 2008

What can Brown do for you? Apparently, he can choke on the final leg of the Triple Crown . . .

NEW YORK (AP) — Big Brown failed in his bid to become horse racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner when he finished dead last to Da’ Tara in the Belmont Stakes.

Da’ Tara went wire to wire to beat eight other thoroughbreds over 11/2 miles, the longest and toughest of the three classics.

“I had no horse,” said Big Brown’s jockey, Kent Desormeaux.

All week long, Big Brown’s trainer, Rick Dutrow Jr. said the horse’s victory was “a foregone conclusion.” He turned out be wrong.

The bay colt’s disappointing performance followed convincing victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He failed on the same track where 10 horses had been beaten over the last three decades. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978.

At least we didn’t end up with more dead dog food/glue on the track.

It cracks me how people behave as if these horses are human and are capable of “knowing” that they are supposed to win the Triple Crown and make history.

It’s like expecting Jeff Gordon to win a race, lately. (HA!)

P.D. – Yeah, I was half expecting Big Brown to go down with the hoof issue.

    RT – Shut yer hole!!!

Someone was telling me there was in excess of $5 million bucks riding on that one horse. o.O

And um, do I detect a Jeff Gordon fan? (I’m really hoping so, because I’m tired of thinking I’m the only one)

Snigs – Guilty as charged. My hierarchy is as such:

    1. Gordon
    2. Dale, Jr.
    3. Jimmie Johnson

Wyatt- You sure you’re not from Indiana?

I no longer feel so alone in the world. :D

I like Gordon, then the Labonte brothers. I met one of them once many moons ago, but don’t know which one it was (Is that sad or what?) and became a forever fan.

We waited with my son in line for hours so he could get Gordon’s autograph . We were within about 15 people when they announce he’s done, too bad and he was gone. My son was so disappointed . He still likes Gordon but not as much as before. The Gordon stuff has come off his walls and the camo has gone up.

Jeff Gordon is still racing? I must keep missing him, even though I watch each and every race more religiously than a Shi’ite imam goes to Splodeyschool™ mosque.

I like the new site. I got it changed in my blogroll.

I ‘love’ the fact that the trainer is now blaming everyone BUT the horse… “It couldn’t have been a problem with Big Brown, there was something else going on.”

At least the rider didn’t kill the horse trying to get something from nothing…

Although he DID set a new record- First ever last place finish for a Derby winner :-)

Rumor has it a representative from Pat’s was snopping around his paddock after the race! ;)

Kim – Never been there (or Pittsboro). I’d like to see the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400 before I die, though.

Snigs – There’s Terry (older) and Bobby (younger). Terry always had the cheesy mustache.

Momster – That’s good for when he’s hiding from you. :)

B.C. – Yeah, he’s had a run of bad luck of late. Dang.

    Dee – Thanks!

Old NFO – We were watching it in the division, mouths agape. One detective was saying, “This is a joke, right?”

Trek – “You can still see the marks where the jockey hit it!”

Who thought a midget riding Sarah Jessica Parker could win anything?

    That was funny!

Well, this KY Person has a very jaundiced view of horse racing and I refuse to watch it. The horses are just too young and too spindly legged to run that that. Let them get some age and muscle and then let them run. It’s not as though they are going to go much faster than they do already.

And let the jockeys get a bit bigger. Most of them are anorectic druggies trying to keep their weight down. I hate horse racing.

Captain America – Grudgingly, yes, it was funny!

Ky person – Watch NASCAR instead. That’s what I do. :)
