Tour De Lance: 2005

By Wyatt Earp | July 2, 2005

Today’s opening stage of the 2005 Tour de France saw American cyclists finished in four of the top six spots. David Zabriskie finished the 11.8-mile course in the top spot, but defending champion Lance Armstrong (well, he has been the defending champion for six years now!) ended the day in second, a mere two seconds behind.

Armstrong is competing in his final Tour, and it is obvious that he wants to go out on top. Chasing his seventh straight title, Armstrong passed (and embarrassed) German Jan Ullrich with three kilometers to go, despite the fact that Ullrich started his time trial one minute before!

It’s just a matter of time before Armstrong is wearing the leader’s yellow jersey – and sticking it to the frogs again.

Would it be just a tad premature to sing, “We Are the Champions”?
