Did Anyone Check The Couch Cushions?

By Wyatt Earp | October 18, 2011

Apparently, the LAPD had a cache of submachine guns and pistols stolen. Oh, and did I mention that the guns were stolen from the SWAT grounds?

Yeah, a place that is manned by at least one SWAT officer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Don’t worry, though, an LAPD spokesbabe said there is no reason to worry.

Los Angeles police officials searched on Monday for a stolen cache of submachine guns and semi-automatic handguns that disappeared from a SWAT training facility, and said they were embarrassed by the loss.

More than 30 Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine guns and M1911 pistols that had been stored at the training facility were stolen, Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rayner said. The weapons had been altered to fire blanks, and it would be “difficult” – although not impossible – to convert them back to full use, she said.

See? No reason to worry. The LAPD has got this sh*t. /snark

Wasn’t this the plot for Lethal Weapon 3? It’s probably part of ATF’s “smuggle guns to Mexican gangs for obscure reasons” plan.

I’m not sure this makes sense. I’m not an expert, so anyone feel free to correct me, but generally speaking you only need a blank firing insert on firearms where you need enough gas pressure built up to cycle the action. This is common on rifles, but not so much on pistols and submachine guns.

The MP5 is a roller-locking mechanism, which I don’t think relies on gas pressure for its action. It should be a delayed recoil mechanism, that will work with blanks just fine without a blank firing adapter being inserted into the barrel.

Maybe there’s an alteration where you can make it so it will only fire blanks, or fire submunitions, but I’m pretty sure an MP5 can fire blanks unaltered. If there’s any experts who can speak on this I’m willing to be corrected.

I DIDN’T DO IT!!! Really – I’ve been in Las Vegas the whole time! Hey, if I want to shoot an MP-5 on full auto I can rent one ;-)
Besides – ammo cost for full auto guns can get steep in a hurry!

Am I just getting old or do the officers in the photo look like they are in high school?

30 MP5′s? That’s a tidy chunk of change to replace those!

Did anyone check with the ATF? I would have started there.

I don’t know whetheer to call this scenario an “OOPS!” moment or more of a “WTF?” moment.

Maybe six of one & a half dozen of the other?

Guess someone’s gonna be called out for that nasty “under lock and key” thing…’ya think?
    ;)

    Roll safe out there.

Fozzy – Not sure. I purged the last two Lethal Weapon films from my memory.

Sebastian – I have a call in to a friend in SWAT. I’ll let you know if I hear back.

PJ – And you’ll need that ammo when Obama outlaws it.

Ingineer66 – SWAT is a young man’s unit. Many of our guys are under 30 when they go there.

Proof – No worries, since CA has money to burn.

Old NFO – I thought not.

Danny – They “borrowed” them for Fast & Furious.

Bob – Keepin’ it real, yo.

Bob G. – Someone is getting suspended – or fired. Really soon.
