I Have A New Love

And no, it’s not professional shooter Jessie Abbate – although she’s hot enough to deserve my attention. I do, however, have a crush on my newly-issued city Glock 22.
I spent yesterday at the PPD Pistol Range for my annual re-qualification. At the start of the day, the instructor asked if anyone wanted to update their 9mm Glock 17s for a more powerful model. The 40-cal. Glock 22 was available, so I jumped at the chance.
I’m glad I did.
The Glock 22 is a mirror image of my old Glock 17 – with more powerful ammunition, obviously – and it actually feels lighter. What’s more, since the new magazines hold three less rounds, the city gave us three of them, instead of the two 17-round mags from my old Glock. I was able to put it to the test through two rounds of qualifying, and it shot like a dream. I shot a 99 each time.
So, if you need me, I’ll be spending quality time with my new friend.

You have to be comfortable with your sidearm. That’s why I carry a .45 Kimber CDP II Ultra. Good Luck with the new pistol.

Ahhh the 9mm the reason why we had to relearn how to shoot and make use of the Mozambique Drill.
Thank goodness we went to the .40 cal a few years ago, and are now carrying a manstopper.

Shooting a 99 at qualifications with a newly issued weapon is what caught my eye! Great job. I also happen to enjoy the company of a nice warm gun! “Happiness is a warm gun baby!”

LDIV – Thanks. I loved my 17, but it’s now old and busted. The 22 is the new hotness.
Andy – Well, let’s hope not because . . . well, I’ve said too much.
Skip – I can’t choose the manufacturer. City did that for us.
Bluwall – They now give us a choice of 9mm, .40, or .45. There was one officer – a female – in our qualifying class who decided to stay with the 9mm. Everyone else traded up.
Brian – Yeah, I was looking for a stock pphoto when I found her. She’s pretty damned hot.
Danny – The last five years I shot 98, 95, 99, 100, and the 99 on Tuesday. The worst I’ve ever shot during qualifications was 94. Of course, it’s just target shooting, but I’m glad my shooting hasn’t deteriorated.

There is a standing invitation to you and any other LEOs to shoot at the range behind the barn at my house in Upper Bucks. 100 yards to the back stop. I use a Glock Model 20. 10mm which is slightly larger than your .40caliber. Just sayin’…

My home defense gun is old, ancient, antiquated and reliable (just like me). Colt, M1911A1. .45 cal, circa 1957, backed up with a PA carry permit.
I can’t afford all the modern yuppy firepower, but I don’t need it. If I can’t stop an intruder with 7 rounds of .45 Black Tallon HP I’m screwed anyway.

Congrats on your new love. I was glad to see there were
no flame wars (yet) in the comments on 9mm (9×19 NATO) VS .40 S&W VS .45 ACP. The 9 gets a bad rap due to the gun vs ammo choices but it is cheaper to shoot. The .40 is a step up with ballistic jelly wound channels etc. equal to or greater than the best 9mm round, and my favorite (cause I’m old) the venerable .45
is slowly fading away in this its 100th Birthday year.
But the 230 gr ball round (461 ft-lbs) still has more muzzle energy then the majority of 9mm rounds.
The .40 has the .45 beat energy wise and with cor-bon ammo the expansion is very impressive to say the least.
Wyatt does your time between shots due to recoil seem to suffer or is the Mod 22 well buffered?
In my Mk4 1911 it seems that after each shot the old honey just settles down to almost the exact same sight picture with very little re-adjustment after recoil, kind of like an old venerable M1A1 battle rifle does, how does the Glock handle in rapid?
Can you tell I’m jealous? LOL

Jon – I shot a 99 in qualifying an hour after I received the gun. Does that answer your question?
There was a little more recoil in the .40, but I can’t speak on rapid. I was trying to get a good score.

Sadly, many (most?) cops I know don’t know their arse from their elbow when it comes to firearms . . . . and very few spend more than the minimum required to get “proficient” with their duty and off-duty weapons.
Present company accepted . . . . . naturally.

Jack Lee – Beretta makes some fine firearms.
Bluwall – I’m no expert by any means. I only own two guns besides my city-issued Glock. Many of the guys in my division own five times that amount.

You have just made me very jealous,have not shot a good pistol since the UK ban on handguns,shooting black powder revolvers which is all we can shoot as handguns now is not the same,mind you i now have more rifles than i ever had handguns only ever had five or six handguns now i have twelve rifles and two BP revolvers and can buy another if i want which i will later this year just bought an .36 1851 Colt London Model by Uberti & want an 1862 Police later. Have a very cheap 1858 .44 Remington by Pietta cost me £65.00 wheni got it but is very very accurate.

I’m envious of the .40, but I’m sticking with my 9mm. I have a 17, wife has a 26, and both handle very nicely. I’d rather hit what I’m aiming at than miss with more stopping power. Several of my special ops friends like the 17, and a bunch of friends in Israel carry it as well. Like the extended mag, and if I need more than 33 rounds–what the hell! If I win the lottery, maybe I’ll reconsider, but with my investment being what it is, I’ll just stay there. My bedside armament is a tried and true S&W k frame with +P hollow points and two speed loaders–since 99.8% of all discharge incidents are five shots or less, I should have most situations covered.

What took you so long? In the late 90s I started out carrying and competing with the mid-size G23 .40 S&W, Later moved up to the G22 for competition, reserving the G23 for carry only. Once ammo prices soared, I switched to the G19 (using G17 mags) for competition… but still trust only the .40 for packing serious heat.
Unfortunately, my G23 is still languishing in the TPD evidence locker until the end of the month so they can swab it for DNA to hopefully catch the dirtbag who stole it.

Doc – Detectives like myself can carry the 26, but we have to buy our own. No thanks. The 22 is plenty light for my tastes.

Its pretty hilarious. When they do the slow mo one can clearly see that his trigger finger is on the trigger even as he’s still pulling from holster. If he had hit the femoral artery we’d be talking Darwin Award.

What is your Course of Fire in Philly? Here in Connecticut we shot 60 rounds from 3 to 25 yards. (The semi-auto course is based on the old revolver course just with four Beretta 9mm mags rather than ten .38 speedloaders.) Each round is scored five points if in the K-5 zone giving 300 as the max score. 285 or better was considered expert. (I only missed expert once – I qualified while suffering from the flu with a 102 degree fever.)
