Overnight Thread

By Wyatt Earp | April 26, 2011

There are a lot of dangerous jobs in law enforcement. The SWAT team and the Bomb Squad come to mind. One that doesn’t to come to mind is the Aviation Unit.

The worst dangers most helicopter crews face are either hitting a bird or being caught spying on nude sunbathers. It’s usually a safe assignment – until people start firing at you.

A man shot and damaged a Los Angeles police helicopter Sunday and forced it to make an emergency landing at a Van Nuys airport before he was subdued by family members and arrested, authorities said.

The man was firing shots at random with a rifle early in the morning, then turned his fire toward the responding police helicopter and hit the fuel tank, Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger said. The helicopter landed safely at Van Nuys Airport, and no officers were hurt. (H/TC/A)

You gotta wonder if the shooter was using the sideways sight alignment.

In other news, New York pervs can rejoice!

Shakespeare’s plays, Einstein’s theories – and porn queen Jenna Jameson’s steamy online sexcapades. New Yorkers can take their pick at the city’s public libraries, thanks to a policy that gives adults the most uncensored access to extreme, hard-core Internet smut.

The electronic smut falls under the heading of free speech and the protection of the First Amendment, library officials say.

So, it’s not okay to attach a plaque of Ten Commandments on a public library, but it’s okay to yank your doodle, it’s a dandy? Got it.

And finally, Ed linked this last night, but I thought it deserved more coverage:

Now that’s talent! She will be my new bride.

We had another incident like that back when I was rentacopping in Bel Air in the 90′s. We had an LAPD rover on loan to coordinate (read “keep the fuck out of the way of”) with LAPD operations. I’m working the dispatch room one graveyard shift and we’re listening to LAPD run down a fleeing, armed fugitive. The helo cornered him in a back yard shed and all of a sudden we hear a very level voice saying, “OK, we’re taking some rounds up here.” The perp had opened up on them with an AR15. The bird stayed on station until the perp was in custody, the RTB’ to Van Nuys.

This happens a couple of times a year here in the LA Basin.

We had one of our A-Stars lit up a couple of years ago with ground fire.

Not sure if they still are, but San Diego Sheriffs used to be the only law enforcement agency in the country certified to shoot back from helicopters. They had two aircraft shot down in a single incident once and decided they need some fire power of their own.

Scary, indeed, for the L.A. helicopter and crew..our daughter once worked as a street cop there in Van Nuys. I remember during the Rodney King riots, a Pasadena PD helicopter caught a few bullets, thank goodness they got back to the heliport safely. My hubby had bought me a scanner for Christmas two years before and I kinda teased him for getting it for me. After those riots started I fired it up. I will never, ever, forget that PPD helicopter crew saying….”we’re hit, we’re hit”. God Bless you men and women in blue.

I started to read this post and saw “until people start farting at you.”

    It’s way too early.

And you like that a chick makes Chewbacca noises? Wow. You don’t ask for a whole lot, do you? Eeesh.

They’ll probably start mounting .50′s in the Isuzu pickup trucks in Dearborn Michigan soon for AA. Since many can ululate they can probably speak Chewbacca(ian) well
enough after a little practice to replace yelling Allah Akbar when trying to down heli’s.

(Disclaimer: To be fair, since the last poll only 70% would support Hamas so out of about 700,000 that only means )490,000

It would depend on what Wyatt was doing WITH her when she is making the Chewbacca noise!

For the sideways sight alignment picture, would that be the 9 o’clock sight picture? I am amazed I have not seen
Models with sights installed on the slide sides yet. Can it be far off? LOL

Richard – They’re nothing if not ballsy.

DP – Probably an unsettling feeling.

Ingineer66 – That’s awesome, and sometimes very necessary.

PBJ – Thanks. This job is many things, but boring is not one of them.

GroovyVic – Not really, I aim low.

Jon – Can we have Canada annex Dearborn? They’re useless in this country.

    L Frame – BINGO!

Jon – I’m sure some enterprising gun manufacturer will think of it.

Off topic, but this is what my children would do if I allowed them to get bored and go wherever to do whatever.

Kim – There is no “off-topic” on the overnight thread, but yeah, that’s both awful and awesome!
