Vote For Heather!

By Wyatt Earp | March 15, 2010

It’s like Vote For Pedro, but Heather is an American citizen.

This is Heather Simmons. Heather is a public relations professional from Gloucester County, New Jersey. She is also one of my very best friends, and the first person I met at Saint Joseph’s University. Without her, there would probably be no SYLG, because she fed my writing bug. She recruited me to write for the school newspaper when we were sophomores, and I never looked back. She was also with me when we were in that auto accident with Miss America.

(Of course, if you hate SYLG, Heather gets all of the blame. Heh.)

I mention Heather today because she’s in the news:

The captain of the Pitman Police Department and a public relations professional from Glassboro are the choices of the Gloucester County Democratic Executive Committee to be the party’s two candidates for freeholder this fall. Robert Zimmerman and Heather Simmons were selected by the committee Saturday following interviews with 17 individuals interested in representing the Democrats as freeholder hopefuls.

“They rose to the top,” county Democratic Chairman Michael Angelini said of the pair.

Of course. Heather has always been the best and brightest person in the room.

The selections will be presented to Democratic committeemen and committeewomen in the county later this week for their endorsement. Simmons, who has never before run for elected office, said “it’s a great honor to be in the position to serve.”

Simmons was valedictorian of the Class of 1991 at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. She has a master’s degree from Rowan. She has operated her own public relations firm, Heather Simmons Communications, since 2004.

Look, Heather is more than qualified, but that’s not why the citizens of Gloucester County should vote for her. They should vote for her because she cares deeply about her community, she has been involved in educational matters for her entire adult life, and she is the smartest person I have ever known.

But most of all, you should vote for her because she is an honest, caring, intelligent individual who I have the honor of calling my friend.

UPDATE 10-29-10: In light of recent circumstances surrounding Heather’s campaign, I can no longer in good conscience endorse her run for political office.

    She’s pretty.

I’ll email my nieces and make them vote for her, or there will be no lemon bars this Easter.

Pitman is right next door to where I grew up (Glassboro). Good luck, Heather. Please don’t be a typical NJ Dem. I knew to many of them.

Added: I just clicked through to the story — the link has changed. Anyhow, one of the Freeholders she could be replacing is a former classmate of mine, Joe Brigandi. I don’t know much, if anything, about his politics. In high school politics were pretty low on a list of priorities. But since his reason for not running again is listed as family reasons I do wish him and his family well.

Imagine that, me wishing a dem well. ;-)

Mrs. Crankipants – Very pretty. And I like the lemon bar bribe. If Obama can bribe House members . . .

Jim – She’s not a typical Dem. Trust me, I have known her for 23 years.

On a separate note, those of you who think comments blasting her as a “corrupt Dem” will get through, you’re sadly mistaken. I’m usually pretty easygoing as far as comments are concerned, but one that attack Heather go right into the trash. Besides, you can’t be corrupt if this is your first try at elected office.

Rob – Oh, well then, by all means! Kidding, kidding!
