Our House, In The Middle Of Our Street

By Wyatt Earp | November 12, 2009

Our house, pre-construction.

Our house, pre-construction.

Well, it’s been four months since our house renovations began. Since last year’s birth of our Irish Twins, we needed a helluva lot of space. The construction would give us two new bedrooms – giving us a total of five, one for every kid and one master bedroom – and another bathroom. It wasn’t cheap, but it was necessary. We went with the construction company that my brother-in-law used – J. Rush Custom Construction out of Warminster, PA – and they were fantastic.

Along the way, there were some ups and downs. Joe, the contractor, accidentally stepped through our ceiling, not once, but twice. Thankfully, they were places that were coming out anyway. And you folks probably remember the inside rain showers we had. No ones, fault. It’s just one of those things that happen when you don’t have a roof during summer thunderstorm season. The guys fixed all of the issues and rain damage, making things look even better than before.

You can see the results in the below slideshow. In addition to the new bedrooms and bathroom, we now sport a kickass new bay window in the front and (finally) central air! Until now, we have been living on the po’ side of town. Our window units are now ready for the dung heap!

We cannot possibly say enough good things about the guys – three guys, really – from J. Rush Construction. Joe, John, and Vince were here every day at about 7am, and worked through the late afternoon. Three guys demolished our roof, added a new floor, built the bedrooms and bathrooms, and turned our previously average home into a palace. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone. Actually, the missus recommended them to our friends, and they are getting an addition built soon, too. It’ll take another week or two to get everyone moved in and settled down, but the hard part is over.

Congrats — I’ve had both good and bad contractors at my house, and you’re absolutely right that having a good contractor makes life much, much better.

Congrats!!! All the turmoil has a huge silver lining.

When I was building my man cave I thought it would never be done, but today UPS is bringing something awesome that measures 100″ diagonally, so there you have it. Worth all the sweat, time and every dime.

    Enjoy your new space Wyatt.

Maggie – Thank you. Definitely worth the effort and expense.

DL474 – Absolutely. So many places to hide from the kids!

Jim – These guys were awesome. No complaints at all.

    Rick/John D – Thanks, guys!

Sssteve – I toyed with the idea of having a photo of me behind the curtain, but I didn’t want to lose readers.

Smite – They’re good, and good for you, they’re close.

Woody – And to you, sir.

JeffT – Thanks. We told Kyle and Erik they can each pick out a Fathead for their new walls. Erik wants Star Wars. Kyle wants football or hockey.

USAdmiral – Agreed. Moved once. That was more than enough.

Ingineer66 – And having a bedroom without a red-headed little girl in a crib is a welcome sight, too.

Kerri – Thanks! Have you moved yet, or are you still here?

It’s like “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy & His Wife & Kids”!

It looks fantastic! Very bold color in the bedroom, I’m so happy to know you’re not a “beige” guy. Enjoy all the extra square footage, and living in a dust free environment. I envy your central air!

Mrs. Crankipants – Thanks. The central air made everything worthwhile.

I am so happy for you and your family…

When’s the party? I live a long way off from you, so I need time to travel. :)

    Love the shower!

You’re going to feel lost with all the extra space, I know I did when we expanded the house. But it sure as heck is worth it!! Congrats on making it through.

    Mrs. Crankipants – BYOB!!!

Teetop – It could fit five of six adults comfortably. It’s much larger than I thought it would be.

E.L. – Thanks. It’ll be prefect when we get all our things in the proper places. Then we’ll have room to spare.

Becky – Thanks. We didn’t want to move, because we landed a great neighborhood, so we decided on this.

    George – BITE YOUR TONGUE!

Bob – Thanks. So far, so great.

MeToo – Thanks you. The green was MUCH darker on the walls than we thought it would be, but the rugs complement it wonderfully.
