David Spade: Hollywood Good Guy

By Wyatt Earp | January 14, 2009

Smite A. Hippie sent me this great story. Read on:

LOS ANGELES — Actor and one-time Phoenix resident David Spade has donated $100,000 to the Phoenix Police Department. The department will use the much needed funds to buy high-powered rifles to defend the city from the growing influence of Mexican drug cartels.

Through his publicist, Spade explained that “these guys need to be able to do their jobs, and I am just happy I could help.”

Spade says he got the idea for the donation after seeing a story on FOX News. Phoenix police say Spade called asking to donate to their rifle program after he saw that officers, outgunned and desperate for more firepower, wanted to buy their own semi-automatic rifles.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Alan Hill says 50 AR-15 rifles to be purchased with the donation will be given to patrol officers. (H/TFOXNews)

Friggin’ fantastic. I usually don’t have many good things to say about actors and actresses – except Gary Sinise, who does a tremendous amount for our military personnel – but David Spade is a real friend of the police.

Oh, and Code Monkey sent me these Spade links as well:

Definitely a stand-up guy.

One small problem I see there.

AR’s have been on back order since shortly after Obama won the election. Unless the police get preference on the wait list, they may be waiting for quite awhile.

Saw an article yesterday in Shotgun News that one manufacturer had a back order of 60,000 AR-15’s.

That then brings up the issue of whether quality control will be the same as they’re trying to catch up with the demand.

    Just a thought.

I would have never suspected that Spade isn’t a total hippie. What a cool thing to do.

Saw this story on another sight, with a more diverse user base. The sad thing there was that a lot of the commentators actually thought it was a bad thing for the police to have AR-15s. The only reason they could come up for this was that AR-15s were evil assault weapons, and they didn’t know why the police wanted to use evil assault weapons.

This reaction by these readers was to me, just more proof that the Brady Campaign has done more to hurt police, then it will ever do to stop gun violence.

$2000 per AR is quite pricey. At .gov prices, they should be hitting $700 max for the base guns, a dozen mags for $10 each, Aimpoint and mount for $300.

With the proliferation of the new gas piston ARs and the gas piston AR-like rifles, direct gas impingement rifles should be easy to come by and cheap.

Except, the pending obamanation is going to partner with the Brady Campaign to end firearm ownership to curtail the flow of arms.

While libtards do not correctly leverage economic principles to aid our country, they are great at using scarcity to hinder our freedoms.

+1 for David Spade. He may have appeared in his last movie because of this…

Good for him and those he has helped.

If you’ve ever listened to him talk about his background, you’d get the impression that he’s not an ungrateful, total libtard.

I hope his efforts don’t hurt his career.

Regarding the people behind the comments that marvin mentioned, anyone that says that police don’t need bigger/better guns in Phoenix doesn’t live here in Phoenix. Our southern neighbors might be on the verge of watching their government collapse. This ain’t New Hampshire.

And I have seen different numbers for the quantity/price of the guns on different news articles. I’m sure the Phx PD will use the money wisely.

I don’t like the AR-15. They need something with some stopping power. The M-14 will knock you down at a distance and kep you there. The AR-15 will just poke a lot of little holes in you. Perhaps one or two of the 50 Cal sniper rifles for the swat team would be the ticket also. Oh well, Dave sure had me convinced that he was a hollywood liberal. MUD

Why can’t us Americans just embrace the AK-47. Every person I know in our US military would rather carry an AK than an AR-15 i know they look like terrorist rifles but lets face it they’re cheap, they’re powerful, and they never jam! Hell you can even put an EOTech on it if you want.

Oh.. and that’s awesome he did that. He knows and supports that the only way to fight fire is with even more fire.

Because police engage at more than 300 yards ever. This isnt Iraq. In reality the AR15’s are likely to overkill. I dont live in Phoenix so im really just talking out my ass here, but i doubt that having a large number of paramilitary sitting around is really necessary.

And 2 grand a gun is way too much. then again when its someone else money who cares. And they better not get on the waiting list ahead of me.

I now have a totally different impression of this guy. And it’s all good.

I wonder how many times Obama has donated to anything besides the Black Congressional Caucus.

I’m interested to know what he thinks of our commie president.

Angel – Agreed, a terrific guy and a terrific story. And I know one thing, AK’s can take a beating and still fire well. Might not be a bad idea. Thanks for commenting.

Ben – Maybe they’re waiting for the Mexican invasion? :)

Eric – Using “Obama” and “donate” in the same sentence is a rare feat, my friend. And I am on board with the new found joy-joy feelings about Spade. He’s apparently not your typical Hollywood liberal. Thanks for stopping by!

I don’t understand why Obama gets called out for a stance taken by an entire political party. I’m democratic and I voted for Obama, now I understand that hurts me as a gun owner but I know that’s just part of being a democrat, not voting for Obama. Obama’s not a commie, he like other politicians stick to values saturated in certain political parties. I do hate not being able to find .45 acp ammo tho :(

The animal shelter donation followed his smack of calling Show Low (now my home town) the meth capitol of arizona… he may be right but then all of a sudden he drops some cash on the shelter… was funny. I think his Mom still lives up here.
