Mural Honors Three Fallen Police Officers

By Wyatt Earp | November 18, 2008

My divisional headquarters just got a little brighter.

PHILADELPHIA ― Three of Philadelphia’s fallen heroes were honored during the unveiling of a massive mural in the Olney section of the city Monday.

Family, friends and fellow officers gathered at Broad and Champlost Streets for the unveiling of a mural depicting three officers in the 35th District who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Officer Walter Barclay, Officer Robert Hayes and Officer Chuck Cassidy were memorialized in the outdoor mural on the side of the 35th District headquarters.

“For people to still, after all these years in some cases, to remember those that have fallen in the line of duty is something very special,” Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.

Loved ones were offered a chance to help paint the huge mural. Former Police Officer John Marynowitz and his family picked up a brush to honor his partner, Officer Robert Hayes, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on June 17, 1993. (H/TCBS3)

The artists and the officers’ families have been working on this for a few weeks now, and I can tell you that it looks much better in person that it does in this photo. I can think of no better way to express our gratitude to our fellow officers who served my division with honor. Good job to all involved!
