Iowa Upsets #3 Penn State, 24-23

By Wyatt Earp | November 8, 2008

Gimme an “F!” Gimme an “R!” Gimme an “A!” Gimme a “U!” Gimme a “D!” What’s that spell? Fraud, fraud, fraud!!! Gooooo Penn State!

Bwahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Penn State is perfect no more, its hopes for giving coach Joe Paterno another national title given a sharp and surprising kick by Iowa.

Daniel Murray hit a 31-yard field goal with a second left and Iowa rallied to stunned the third-ranked Nittany Lions 24-23, likely dashing Penn State’s hopes for a spot in the BCS national title game. (LINK)

This will probably get me kicked out of my in-laws’ house for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, but I don’t care. Regular readers know that I despise Penn State – almost as much as I despise Notre Dame – and I thought the Nittany lions were a fraud from the start. (I mean, come on, they scored “great wins” against Coastal Carolina, Syracuse, and Temple. Not exactly college football powerhouses.)

Don’t get me wrong, the Lions are a good team, but they’re a good team in a terrible Big Ten Conference. Hell, my Wolverines play there, and they suck this season! (although, even they won today.) It was only a matter of time until a decent team snuck up on them and used their confidence against them. Hello, Iowa.

I watched most of this game, and despite what the Blue and White Kool-Aiders may think, PSU played terribly. Iowa capitalized on their errors, and since the Lions didn’t put them away in the first half as they should, they were close enough to pull off the upset. Mission accomplished. There will be no National Title for Penn State this year. That’s a shame.

And if it seems like I am overly snarky this time, it is the benefit for our friend Burnsy. Between his constant e-mails reminding me (correctly) that Michigan is awful, and his false bravado for his Alma mater, I couldn’t wait until Penn State stumbled. What better time to do it than during Man’s Weekend. The only drawback is that I couldn’t attend this year, thanks to my recent illness.

Dang, it would have been great to see his face when the Hawkeyes kicked that game-winning field goal. Oh well. Don’t worry, Joe Pa: I’m sure they have an opening for your team in the PapaJohns.com Bowl. Heh.

Then again, ol’ Big Blue finally found a Big 10 patsy to beat. C’mon,… Minnesota??

Trek – If you’ve been reading, no one bashed Michigan’s play more than I. Quarterback by committee? Are you serious? That being said, I’ll take a Gopher win. They’re a conference opponent, not some schlubs formerly from “The Big (L)east.”

I’d respect Penn State more if they got Joe Pa the wins record playing against real teams. They just want to get him the record by playing toads. Weak. Very, very weak.

Cowboy Blob – Sorry, chief, but they were never the powerhouse that their fans claimed them to be. The players expected to win just by showing up. Can’t do that in the Big 10.

Heh… anybody gets up in the rankings, they get spanked… Sorry JoePa! :-)

Meh. My team (Western Kentucky University) has just joined NCAA division I and right now we totally suck. However, our basketball team is usually pretty good – too bad I hate basketball.

Well Wyatt, at least we have that mutual dislike of Penn State.

P.S. We’ll just wait until Nov. 22 when Meatchicken…um, Michigan, travels to Columbus.

They played some sloppy ball yesterday. Soon as basketball season starts, I’ll be wearing cream and crimson. I get some funny looks with an IU cap on here.

Old NFO – I’m not. I don’t like Joe Pa. Not one bit.

JumpOut – That is, until the Gators get to them.

Ky person – College basketball is the only b-ball I like. Maybe that’s because my college (Saint Joseph’s University) had it but not football.

GroovyVic – No bets. We’re gonna get crushed. The Wolverines are terrible this year.

Diller – The only SEC team I like is Auburn. *ducks*

Deanna – I figured you’d be all over that. Don’t you live in Mississippi, though? What about Ole Miss?

Prof – Yeah, they did not play well at all, and Iowa capitalized. Only a few weeks until B-ball is in full swing. Go Hawks!

Here you go: Bobby Knight. It’s coaching like this that’s the reason IU played basketball the way they did.

Uh thanks for the reminder that Syracuse is (no longer) a football powerhouse… I’m holding out for my Boeheim Orangemen’s season to begin…
