Did Russia Fire On Presidential Motorcade?

By Wyatt Earp | November 24, 2008

Just when you thought the Russian/Georgian conflict was all water under the bridge, now this.

Georgia is claiming that Russians fired on a presidential motorcade carrying the Georgian and Polish leaders. Naturally, Russia and South Ossetia deny the claim. Whom do you believe?

Russia and South Ossetia have strongly denied news reports that a motorcade carrying the presidents of Georgia and Poland came under fire, calling the claims “a provocation” meant to destabilize the region.

“This is a real provocation,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists on Monday. “It is not the first time that such things have happened: First they mastermind everything themselves and then accuse the Russian or the Ossetian side.”

Eduard Kokoity, president of the breakaway region of South Ossetia, added: “Today’s event was a deliberate provocative act of the Georgian and Polish presidents targeted at regional destabilization.”

The motorcade, carrying Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Polish President Lech Kaczynski, was passing a checkpoint near Georgia’s breakaway South Ossetia region — site of intense conflict between Russian and Georgian troops in August — when shots were fired Sunday, according to the Georgian Interior Ministry.

The motorcade was not hit and there were no injuries, the Georgian Interior Ministry said. No other shooting was reported in the area.

The shots were fired from Russian-controlled territory as the motorcade passed, the ministry said. (H/TCNN)

What the Hell is going on over there? I don’t know for sure that Russia is behind this alleged attack, but after the Georgian invasion, little would surprise me. Either way, Russia sorely needs to be smacked on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper.

Nooooo!!!!! We need to leave them alone and not interfere! Who are we to tell them how to live their lives! That would be mean! All we are saaaaaaaaaaying is give peace a chaaaaaaaaance!

Just don’t use a Boston Globe or NY Times,…. It might send a mixed message.

    Mr Frontier Marshall

I have great sympathy with your views about hitting Russia on the nose with a rolled up newspaper. However, have you thought of the following:

The polar bear is the largest predator that lives on land, being twice as big as the Siberian Tiger.[28] Adult males weigh 352–680 kg (780–1,500 lb) and measure 2.4–3 m (7.9–9.8 ft) in length. Even your common-or-garden grisly is 8 ft tall. Either could main or kill with a single swipe of the claws.

    2 questions:
How do you get up to his nose with a rolled up newspaper? and, How do you avoid the response?

I am not expecting an answer but I sure as anything hope your next President has the answers because the Russian Bear will try it again and again …

Doghouse – I’m sure if we just let Russia do whatever it wants, everything will go swimmingly. Heh.

Sully – Yeah, that’s not for smacking: it’s for wiping.

Alan B – Personally, I would use someone expendable . . . like Rosie O’Donnell . . . to do the smacking. As far as Obama goes, time will tell. I do not doubt that Russia will continue their shenanigans until someone stands up to them.
